ok i took my dana 35 out of my 99 ranger to the shop to get my 4.56 gears installed, and when i got the axel back intomy truck i drove it in 4wheel drive to find the axel on the pinion was loose it just wabbled. the mechanic said he ran the pattern and it was dead center on the gears, so can i just tighten the pinion nut up to specs???

Umm the the pinion nut is tightened to crush the crush sleeve which sets the bearing preload. With the pinion loose it would be pretty hard to get a good pattern. The spec on the pinion nut is to tighten it down till you have the proper amount of preload on the bearings. Take it back, make him do it right, you payed good money for it i'm guessing.

What exactly happened? The pinion was loose and the guy said it was fine? Or it loosened up after you got it back from him?

If it's the latter, I'll bet he didn't seat a bearing race properly, in which case the pattern will be WAAAYY off. I'd take it back to him (tightening the nut will not fix the pattern if the race moved).

Then the races moved, take it back he'll have to go through it again.
