dana 28 with 35's ?

If you swap in the D35, you can get the transfer case and drive-line from the same truck so you won't need to shorten the front shaft.

So what is the best year to get the rear and D35 from a explorer. And if i decide not to get a transfer case from the explorer the only custom fabrication is to get the front shaft shortned about a inch?

91-94 if you're getting them from the same vehicle. 95-up has a different front end although at some point on the later models they put disc brakes on the rear, which are nice to have.

Pretty much, yes.

if i even wanted to runn 33's would the d28 hold up or no?

Maybe. No promises. Regardless of if you keep that d28 or go to a d35 you NEED to replace the u-joints, check the ball joints, clean the bearings, drain the diff etc. The d28 and d35 can get very fussy when not maintained. With good u-joints and tacked/full circle clip caps the d28 mite hold up just fine but the d35 will hold up much better. It is heavily dependent on how you beat on it. We have had forum members run 38s on a d35 and not break anything but I would be willing to bet the front was open and they did not wheel anything difficult or even wheel at all.

thanks. i am not sure on what i am going to decide to do. i have a set of bfg's m/t 35's and 33's from my other ranger. I have a dana 30 with 3.73 gearing and im sure i can find a 8.8 with the same gearing. so idk if i want to just sell the rears and get a d35. i might just save the dana 30 until i know exactly how to do the sas just run 33's for right now.

I am running 33's on my D28 and it is holding up just fine. I carry extra shafts and stuff but so far no breakage, and I wheel it pretty hard.

yeah thats what i think i might do is just runn 33's on the d28. i need to get some new locking hubs for it tho.

Hey Mikey, I got a fairly new set of warn manual hubs for a d28 (about 300 miles) if your interested...

I had a 88 Supercab 2.9L auto with the D28 with brand new 31-12.50-15 Super Swamper Thornbirds and I kept breaking the drivers side axle. I broke like 3 or 4 and I didn't really wheel it that hard just often.
