so some how i broke my dana 28 axle an bent the axle stub. it broke at the ujoint an just mangled it so anyways my question is why didnt my dana 28 have c clips? i took off all the outer wheel garbage grabbed the axle an pulled it out ! i bought this ranger bone stock. so anyone kno any places for cheap axles. an how all this happend while it was put in 4wd an drove ten feet an then i feel this rough popping shaking so i check it out an there you go shredded u joint an the axle ends beat up. wheel this ranger all the time an no problems before this

Dana 28 and 35 front ends only have a C-clip for the passenger side. For the driver side, the axle is held in by the steering knuckle and has no slip joint (nor does it need it).

By far the cheapest place for a replacment axle is a pull-yer-own junkyard. Or maybe this board if someone is parting one out.

If it is bone stock you will only have a c-clip on the passanger side and not the driver side. The u-joints on these axles are very small! You may have crushed the needle bearing your last time out or you spit a cap. I have broken many of these axles shafts in many different situations. I have a complete set of:

4 Dana 28 axle shafts and other parts

2 right side(long side the side that usually breaks) axle shafts with brand new napa u-joints (never used)

1 middle axle shaft with a used u-joint

1 left side(short side) axle shaft with brand new napa u-joints (never used)

1 brand new without box napa u-joint for outer shafts

1 used but good condition axle stub

1 used but good condition manuel locking hub

I am selling everything together. I can e-mail pics if you are interested.

I will take any reasonable offer

this is the passenger side axle thats why i was wondering why it came out. an so far no luck finding an axle an stub an the axle has no notch or anything for a c clip

Then it isn't stock, and it will work its way out of the diff because of the slip joint.

What you say doesn't add up.

Did you remove the INNER passenger axle shaft? There should be a c-clip on that.

As a side note: I run my passenger side with no c-clip or c-clip eliminator, and it has yet to work loose.

the inner and outer axle shafts are broke or bent so there both out yea. i dunno why i could just pull it out but i did ! maybe someone did somthing to the truck before i bought it? idk all i kno is that passenger side axle just pulled out easy as can be an no junk yards around here have any dang axles!

So is the end of the inner shaft where it goes into the diff broken? Is there a mangled c-clip floating around in there? If not, then someone else messed with the truck and didn't put the clip back in.

Like I said, I run mine without the c-clip and have never had any problems, so it's possible you never had a clip in there.

no the splined end of the inner shaft is just fine nothings broke an when i took it out it didnt just fall out it came out real slow, was good news for me actually cause i didnt have to pull the diff. so the drivers side actually isnt supposed to have one it just pulls out normally ? just wondering

yes the driver side doenst have one.. the passenger side has one but doesnt need it.. if you pulled it out slow are you sure it wasnt just the piece that came out of the boot? i did a c clip elminator in mine an it has worked great.. just a spring inside the splined hole

oh alright. an no it wasn't just a piece its the whole entire passenger side axle assembly thats out it was slow to pull out because it was like suctioned in there

The passengerside definitely needs a clip (or needs the clip eliminator spring). If the shaft is not walking out of the hub yet, you've been damn lucky, but it's likely to happen at some point (or the splines disengaging the side gear in the diff).

If you can't find D28 axleshafts, then maybe look for a D35 whole axle. Can't hurt, and you probably won't break it again like you would another D28 shaft.
