I was recently pushing my 2000 2wd ranger out of the drive way (engine not running) and had someone turn the steering wheel so i could make a corner. Well, power steering fluid flowed up and out of the reservoir with enough force to push the cap off. Now the pump makes a whinning sound and the truck chatters really bad when turning to the right, especially when the engine is idling. The fluid is not low, even though I lost a decent amount.

What have I done?!

I'm guessing its bad to force the steering system without the engine running, but I have never had a problem in the past, can someone please enlighten me about wether this is a bad thing to do? I am a bit clueless on this.

Thanks for the help,
Mike

I've had the same thing happen a number of times on mine. It doesn't damage anything (outside of making a mess of things), although you may have gotten some air into the system which is probably why it's whining.

It should purge itself after a few turns while driving, though you could also just jack the wheels up and cycle the steering from lock-to-lock a few times with the engine running should purge the air out as well.

hmm...

well, I've driven it a few times and done a bunch of turning figuring that it would self purge, but to no avail. Is there a proper way to bleed the system? Maybe I'll have to do it manually.

It was very frothy when I first drove it, but has since gone back to looking normal.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks, I'll have to try and come up with something like that.

Woah, I just did the same thing, with turning the wheels without the engine running, and I'm getting the same symptoms.

I was just about to come on here to post about it but thought to check new posts first, and even search a little. Good thing I looked before making a new thread.

I'll be trying this soon.

How come you have to pull a vacuum on the reservoir? Can you not just run it without the cap?

Same idea with a different end will work for bleeding brakes and clutches too.

you really should not have to do anything out of the ordinary. The PS system is self bleeding. make sure it is full and go to a parking lot and do slow figure 8's. the system bleeds when the wheel is turned almost all the way to each side. you accomplish this with the figure 8's...........make sure it is full of ATF
