:annoyed: I did something dumb, long day at work, it's cold out.. trying to strip my truck to replace the wheelbearings again.. Grabbed the hub socket too early forgetting the c-clip and splined thrust washer, and cracked the washer. What are my options on this, does that washer have to be splined or can I just find a regular washer?

the only reason i see it being splined is so the c-clip can catch the teeth to hold it there. i bought one for mine it was like $15 at a dealer

The washer has splines so that it doesn't spin. The outer nut in the hub has (or should have) a pin it in the fits in one of the holes in the washer. This keeps the nuts from backing out and keeps your wheel bearings tight.

he is refering to the splined washer that holds the axleshaft in not the locking washer for the bearings and yes it should be splined so the cclip will hold it in place

ya could get a new one at a local junk yard. might not even charge ya. i had to get some a lil while ago and the cashier just waved his hand at me and said" dont waste my time with this kinda shit" lol i've herd that many times since. should be relatively inexpensive.

Oooh right.. It's been a while since my hubs have been apart, oops. :icon_twisted:

i actually have 3 or 4 extras of those only willing to part with 1 or 2 though i like having spares of anything i might need, if you cant find them locally let me know and i will give ya 1 free and send it in the mail to ya

Ford parts counter said they do not have a part number for the splined washer for manual hubs. I did an auto to manual (warn) conversion.. what on the manual hubs holds the axle fully seated in the knuckle?

Anybody have this part number?

is the part number, it's the 3 washers. Plain steel, plastic, and the splined steel washer (that I busted)

What a ripoff $, but atleast I can put my truck back together.

I don't use those in my truck. Letting them float in and out a little hasn't hurt anything in 8 years and I've done everything from plow snow, daily commute to tear up the bottom on rocks with it.

The reason I don't have them in is because with some of my replacement outers they wouldn't fit. I had no choice but to use them without and see what happened. Nothing happened, so I just left them off both sides.

I don't get it, with the cut & turn on my ttb, I wear those washers out every now and again. When they do wear out, I lose the locking capabilities of that hub. If your axles just float in and out, doesn't it also go from 4x4 to 2 wheel?

What kind of outers are you running?

I havent run them in at least 35,000 miles. Some of those miles have been hard on the four wheel drive. I actually had the front end apart a couple days ago to change fluid and inspect the front diff and went from lock to lock without the shaft ever going into the spindle farther than the cut channel for the c clip. Yes I did push and pull on the shaft while checking it.

Ford mechanic mentioned that when I was looking for the part but I was not willing to gamble when i do 300+ mile's one way for ski trips.

I like my spindle seals to function properly as well.
