hey guys i have 02 xlt 2wd, and i plan on sas'ing it. i was planning to run a d44 with 37s but due to the availability of them i was thinking of a d30 because there is tons of them in my local junkyard on yj's and i can get the whole setup. i am planning to run leaves because of my current set up. my question is will that axle handle 35s knowing that i mainly use it to drive to work and school. and when i do go wheeling its only like uneven trails or a little mud hole, no rock crawling or anything, just a little flexing, and possibly posting up on a buddy's tire:D

So do you plan on making your truck 4wd? Hope you have planned all this out seeing that your truck is a 98+, has the IFS.

I will say, its easier to do this to a truck that is already 4wd.

people bad mouth the d30's all day long, and half of those people are serious hardcore wheelers(with alot of skinny pedal usage), and the other half never went sas before. im contemplating doing the same thing in my 85 b2, and almost did it to my 00 ranger i just sold. comming from the jeep side of things, i had a YJ with a hp30 and ran various size tires on it from 31's to 35's with a 350, and no i never broke anything besides the outer ujoints. ideally i wouldnt go with massive power and huge tires on a 30, but for most peoples needs it works just fine. when u lock it it will be a little weaker, but there are kits to adapt d44 outers on it and they seem to increase the strength a good bit. i would go with a YJ hpd30 which will be a little harder to find (94-95YJ), and they give u more clearance and the driveshaft will be higher, which will be better on your pinion angles too. i would look at jeepforum.com and jeepsunlimited.com and do the central disconect mod(u can buy a kit, but its easy to make one). i also see u have the 3.0 which should be fine for 35's and a d30(even locked), although i would regear to 4.88's. also once u are set up SAS, then upgrading isnt hard from that point, and u can easily sell a d30. hope this helps

yes i have been thinking everything through and thats why im asking all these questions so im informed before i start this thing lol and thanks dealer, that helps out alot. i was also looking at the 96-99 xj hpd30s because the dont have that central axle disconect. and im also wondering that since they dont have locking hubs, would it be stuck in full time 4wd or could i just switch it to 2wd on my tcase for city driving and then switch it to 4x4 to get both axles turning. im going to be running a divorced tcase setup if that helps. thanks

Just put the tcase in 2wd mode and you will be fine.

Just like if his '02 was a factory 4x4, the front driveline is always turned by the front wheels.

alright so my shaft will always be turning just disconected

oh alright i see now thanks but im gonna try to get one without the central axle disconect from a 96 to 99 xj to make it easier on me lol
