D port VS round port

i pullet the 2.3 out of my 88 today and go it striped down to swap parts on to a 83 motor i got, and saw that the heads are not the same at all my 88 is a roller camed and has d ports smaller ports on cyl 2 and 3 and big on 1 and 4:icon_confused: .MY 83 ranger moter has a regular cam and even sized round ports. WICH HEAD IS BEST??? im using the 83 short block because it is fresh and very clean recent rebuilt and want to bild a head for it i have a good friend that is relly into the engine performance department and builds late model and dirt track moters he will do a port job valves put cam in and degre it for me and even use his flow bench for ........FREE:icon_bounceblue::icon_bounceblue::icon_bounceblue:!!! (relly good friend, known him for long time)

I think the 83 head is beter and looks like a beter power builder but we are cuting and opening about 60% to 75 % int. and ex. this is for a 4x4
 
The roller cams are better from what I've heard...

You can use the D port head with the O port intake, but it may be a mismatch leading to fuel pooling or simply poor flow...the D ports should actually be bigger...and the roller cam allows for better high end revs because the valves won't float as easily (apparently)...

I had used the D port head with an older O port intake and carb, but it had to go due to the way it was set up with emissions...and the fact that it was a POS...I went with the Motorcraft 5200 as in the pic below...this was off an 78 Mustang II with a D port 2.3...worked out very well...the pic is of the original head I had without the roller cam...but it had a mild racing cam put into it...did actually make a slight difference, but the bottom end was the 2.0 and it wasn't good...the hose sitting in front of the EGR was to carry off the foam that was building up due to blow-by...it worked for a bit...:)

I've seen quite a few of these questions lately and can only say the best is the D port roller cam...with a 2 bbl carb...the best intake is the lower intake from an FI 85 or 86 with an adapter to take the Holley 350 CFM carb...

But you can mix and match without too much loss of power...just a matter of getting the best bang for your buck...

There are two D port heads. One has a heart shaped combustion chamber, and the other has a D shaped combustion chamber. The heart shape will have higher compression. The D shape was used in turbo apps as well as others.

The D port open chamber head flows extremely well in stock form.

The round port head was usually found on 2.0 engines.

Per one racing guru, the round port will outflow any of the other heads if ported to its max.

Other than cleaning up the bowls, and slight shaping, and gasket matching, porting is mostly effective at high rpm applications.

Roller cams are always better. Also, get a set of round tooth gears, and you have the best setup.:)shady
 
The only bad part about the round port head is the lack of a good intake manifold.
The d-port comes with the best 2300 intake available.
Yes, the round port is capable of outperforming the d-port head but it requires a custom made intake manifold. I built mine out of exhaust pipe and plate steel.
