95' Splash ExCab 4x4 3.0 automatic with autolocking hubs.

Of course 4x4 doesn't work... I've been stuck about... 3 times? Hoping the 4x4 would lock in, but nothing!

I put her in neutral, click the dial to 4h or 4l... wait a couple seconds, hear the click-click and see the light on the dash turn on... but the front tires aren't spinning! And don't ask, I KNOW for SURE the front tires aren't spinning.

Yes yes yes, switch to manual hubs, but I don't have the $300 bones right now, or I would... What can I do to get the 4x4 working again? I've got until December before I need it working.

Sounds like an autohub issue....which if it is you'll need to replace them anyway. The manuals are 300% more reliable, and will not ever leave you stranded like autohubs will. If the hubs are indeed the issue, it would be worth your time and money to save up and get manuals.

New manuals are cheaper than new autohubs.

Ah damn, well I was hoping there was a trick or something in the $50 range to get the autohubs at least working... but I guess it's another thing I'm going to have to save for...

The 4X4 PCM may be your issue. Check to see if your model has this.

I just done a lot of reading on the 4X4 control module, yes, the one behind the passenger side kick panel. As far as i know, its the only module in that location in 01-05 rangers.

Here is what I have been able to learn on this issue (because I'm going thru it too):
"PCM"= the 4X4 Power Control Module

1) if the 4Xhigh and low lamps do not test cycle after ignition = PCM issue.
2) PCM issues are caused by battery issues like impropper jumping or low voltage.
3) PCM issues have been resolved by disconnecting the connections, "wiggling" the wires and
reconnecting. This may be due to connection corrosion or the PCM just benefitted from a power reset.
4) PCMs salvaged from later year models have worked. (verify this first)
5) PCMs from salvage yards have been bought cheap.
6) most DIYers replace the the motor and switch first before looking at the PCM.
7) there many fuses and relays relating to the 4X4- check them all.
8) the majority of electric 4X4 shifting problems have been resolved at the PCM.
9) PCM part number 1L5Z-7E453-AC
10) best new PCM internet dealer price is $137.00 @ silverstateford & $140 @ partsguyed
11) this is an easy fix- don't pay somone to do this.

If it's clicking, its not the 4x4 PCM...its most likely the hubs or the motor on the transfer case.
