I re-did the intake & injection manifold on my truck ('89, 2.9L, 4wd, a4ld) and added several new parts, water pump ete...

Turned out one head was the new heavier type (passenger side) Both had felpro gaskets.

I took the oil pan off as I was going to replace the gasket & pump (I want to run 5w40 syn diesel oil).

Anyway I got the pan off and was looking around and I see some green droplets :bawling: after removing the heads, I guessed the head gaskets were getting detiorated from sitting (my best guess they look crappy), but I'm figuring on replacing both heads anyway to be safe.

After I took the heads off and wiped the oil & crap off, I looked at the cylinder's. All but one have some degree of pitting

#1 no pitting
#2 some minor pitting
#3 more than #2
#4 same as 3#
#5 worst one
#6 a little worse than #3 & #4

The pitting on #5 and others dosent feel very deep at all, but there is a fair amount of it. There dosent look to be any crosshatch left.

The truck had sat for probably 5 years (dont know for sure) and has almost 113K on it.

I really dont know if I should do a re-ring job on it, leave it as is or what to do. I was hoping to have it done and be driving it by oct. but I doubt that now ( I'm also doing a trans. rebuild + painting)

The best part is I had every thing back together and running. I guess I'm glad I found out, but it's a nice setback.

Thoughts/advice?

Might just as well pull the rest of the engine out and find another to replace it with. Hell if the pitting is that bad I might not even use it as a rebuild core. Not worth your effort and time
