before i go any further would like to have some input. 1988 2.9l, had fuel issues so i fixed and or replaced everything from fuel pumps, filters, fuel line and regulator. pressure is where its suppose to be, 38psi. Start it up and start driving, after about 10 miles or so its starts to cut out for few seconds, blows out some black smoke and kicks right back up. another mile it does again. did this for a few days, went back through the fuel system and everything is correct and in good condition. put new plugs and wires, checked dist cap and rotor, looks good. but its starting to get worse, can feel hesitation every few minutes or so and after about 10 minutes on the road it starts to cut out. I have only had the truck for about a month, so finding all the gremlins is a everyday issue. :icon_confused:

have you tried to put the pedal to the floor when this happens? if so does it get worse or seem to pick up? if so you may have an issue with fire.

if you give it gas while its happening it continues for a second and then picks back up normal. some days are worse than others. When i changed the plugs out a few days ago they were white and ashy, burning too hot. Checked the new plugs yesterday and they were starting to turn white and ashy. timing is correct, rpm correct.:dunno:

Check your fuel pump relay mounted on the passenger side fender. If it is still the original one it is probably green in color. I have put three on my 88 since July.

These trucks have a very simple circuit for the fuel pump; if it is running at all it probably isn't the computer.
