 2005 Ranger FX4, 4.0L, 5 speed manual. One day the cruise control just quit. I don't even get the little dash icon on start up. Checked the fuse indicated by the manual, it's good. Any ideas?

Isn't there a recall on Cruise Control? If so, you might just get it fixed for free ;-)

Never mind, looks like the cut off point was 03.

Bad clutch switch? Can you start the truck without pushing in the clutch pedal?

Clutch Switch

Come to mention it, yes i've observed recently that since the car start guys
replaced my Compustar remote starter, I haven't had to step on the clutch
to start the truck. Thanks, for the info, I will investigate further.

Clutch Switch Confusion

Checked the Haynes manual on how the switch is removed. Seemed straight forward but when I looked at the switch, it came off totally different. I think I understand the principle on how it works but it was kind of like a clam shell sort of a deal. The manual says when reinstalling be sure the switch is securely seated on the master cylinder pushrod. What part? The metal or the plastic part? Does the switch side up and down with the rod or is it somehow supposed to be retained at the bottom. A diagram on how it's supposed to be secured would have helped. No change, still no cruise control & still starts in gear or without depressing the clutch pedal.

I would check the wiring anywhere they cut into it for the remote starter. It's probably not the switch, they had to cut into the Clutch Position Sensor line so that the starter would work without the clutch pedal pushed in. It sounds like they just hardwired it closed, which means the computer thinks you're always pushing in the clutch pedal. The proper solution is to use a relay or something similar so that the remote starter closes the circuit when using the remote starter and then otherwise lets the clutch pedal sensor signal pass through.

The cruise is vacuum controlled
There are numerous things that can go wrong

There are 2 powered systems and the fuses are for multiple systems, if those other systems work the fuse is fine.

Things to check

Vacuum leaks
Speed sensor on rear axle
faulty brake/cruise shutdown switch
faulty ABS system

Do you have a OB II sanner to get the codes it is sending ?

its the brake pressure switch. same thing happened to my dads sport trac. changed it out for like 12 dollars and dah dah. cruise was back up and running

Cruise is only vacuum based up to 94. 95 and up is all electronic.

Also check the fuse in the fuse box. It also sounds like you may have a wire in the column that is shorting out the control cruise lever. you may have to replace the turn lever.

I have the same truck and if you find a ford Workshop manual you will find that the cruise control system has a self diagnostic capability. to enter the mode you need to hold the off button on cruise when turning the key to run position.

You can find these manuals used I found my Workshop manual along with the wiring manual for the truck on ebay for 45.00 and it was worth every penny. The manual makes everything idiot proof with very simple instructions. After reading through it I can only think that Chilton is screwing people by not putting this information in their manuals. Go to dealer... huh to hell with the dealers. Over charging bastards.:headbang:

My jeep had a bad clock spring, once I found a elecrical manual I was able to trace the power from the fuse to the steering column thru the brake switch. I had power going to the connector for the clock spring in the steering column but nothing coming out when the speed control was on.

You might think I'm nuts, but check the center high mounted stop light (CHMSL) bulb. Mine was burned out and when I installed a new one the cruise control started working. I am wondering if the cruise control is enabled and dropped out when current flow in the stop light circuit reaches a minimum value. If you have burned out bulbs in the stop light circuit then the cruise control system stops working....my observation anyway.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman, This thing's been dead for almost a year! Please look at the dates from previous posts, before adding to a thread.
