Crossmember removal poll.

This is the crossmember that the tire carrier bracket bolts to. It's "gone" so I am considering just grinding it out and being done with it because it's gonna kill the clean look I'm going for with the frame.

Should I replace it, or will I be fine without it? Since I've technically been without it the whole time.

The other crossmember shown is one that I bolted in for support while I removed the other ones. I'll probably leave it in but it was mainly meant to hold everything while I tool the two out above the tank. (one was "gone" anyway)

And yes, while it is still there it is no good at all. I could probably rip it off with my bare hands.
 
It is really up to you, Bro. If you feel you don't need it...away with the evil rusted beastie!!! Besides, who is going to look under your frame? Is it going to be a show truck that you are going to put up on a lift at a show??
 
It's more or less for safety reasons, and it will go to a few minor car shows. Since I'm in the sticks lifted trucks get show support lol. Anyone looking at the rear suspension would see that in a heartbeat.

I gave it a little tug with my bare hands and it popped right out. Definitely wasn't doing anything.
 
No crossmembers would look real clean.......but.....you'll twist the frame unless you put a thick piece of flat-bar(3/8 inch thick by 6 inch wide) back there somewhere in place of the bad/temporary crossmembers...
 
I say it should be replaced. It will help prevent unnecessary frame twisting or at least excessive amount of twisting. The bed and cab mounts will take more of the twist without it and will over time frigtie those mounts.

Then in that case you need to replace it. Maybe...make it really custom? Maybe some diamond plate stuff to finish it off? I saw a neat looking undercarriage at a swap meet last month at Plant City, Fl. Some guy had a neat older Jeep Wrangler and he had diamond plate under the Jeep for a finished look to match his front bumper that had a diamond plate skid plate. Looked really neat.

Would it be find to bolt a piece of metal in where the old one mounted, or should I have it welded?
 
Is the truck gonna have a bumper?? If so then don't worry about taking it out.
 
bolting in a new one shoule be plenty strong enought for your application, unless you are planning on some heavy duty offroading with it
 
that support has a lot to do with the distance apart the frame is you could bolt something else in, if you are going to run a stock bumper your going to run into a couple issues of being able to use the far most rear bolt holes

Why is this question being asked????? Cross members are important and to take one out without replacing is just &^$#&* stupid......even more so since you have it torn down.
 
i say do what reggioisme did, put some square tube back there so that the frame is tied back together and youll have some added security if you ever decide to tow anything. you could even use the tube as a base for a custom bumper, whether you weld directly to it or make it a bolt on - bolt off deal. either way, put something back in its place before you invest more time and money into it
 
Or you could masturbate on the old cross member and hope it holds... Just an idea.
It's been awhile since my tire carrier was carrying a tire. I just removed the tiedown or whatever you wanna call it from the cross member. No point removing it till your ready to fix it correctly.
