would like to know if an 89 2.3 liter 5 speed and 2.9 liter 5 speed use the same transmission cross member ?

I don't know for sure, but if both use the same trans then I would say yes.

Despite the trans crossmembers being stamped "auto" or "manual" I cannot find any actual differences between any of them between 83-92. And I have had several laying next to each other, and even used them all in the same vehicle.
