I'm in desperate need to a quick answer to this question and know I can count on you guys. It's an emergency repair job on a very tight schedule and this large extended cab, fullsize bed, F-150 is sticking out past my garage door and I cannot stop to rest until I can get it down and done and I am desperately worn out from 41 hours of work in a 48 hour period. This is the place I know that will get me a quick reply, it beats all Ford forums, f-150 forums etc etc for people responding and it is top on my list (I own and drive an 89 BII, hench my membership,as well as 2 fullsize F series).
I rarely post but have bought ans sold a few things here and met a couple locals, but I know I still haven't read everything on this site.
Anyway, my problem. I have an 94 F-150 5.0 and the motor exploded. I also have a low mile 5.0 I pulled from a great running LTD. Because the LTD engine was such a peach, I remobvved the upper intake, plenum, all accessories, brackets, pilleys, manifolds etc. Basically kept the complete block, heads intact as well as the cam and crank assemblies. I also kept the original LTD harmonic balancer as well and it had the same ford part number as the one on the truck.
I took the truck motor out along with attached tranny as the motor was seized tight as a drum and I couldn't spin the flexplate to unbolt it. I removed all the truck engine equiptment to begin turning the LTD motor into the truck motor. Everything went absolutely great and is back to a 100% complete stock 94 truck engine install with and 89 main motor basically. Only modification, aside from the major external componets was that I had to to drill and tap a 1/2" hole in a certain spot in the rear top of the LTD block to locate the block temp sensor(?) which was on the truck setup.
I got everything intalled and hooked up, and was ready to put the tranny back in and I then compared the flexplates and they were identical in size, counter weights location etc. I even laid the flexplates down edge to edge and spun them together and they meshed perfectly. SO, I thoght to keep the engine in good harmonic balance I opted to use the LTD flexplate to go along with it's crank, and harmonic balancer etc. which I am using.
At this point I now have most everything installed, tranny and all. So I go grab my truck starter to put it on. Well, here's the deal. The truck starter is sort of the newer type, smaller diameter starter and it has a 10 tooth count. The LTD starter is an older, larger type and it has a 9 tooth count. Am I in trouble to the differnet tooth count on these starters or does the smaller starter with the higher tooth count spin at a different ratio making it compatible.
I am at a complete standstill now because I can't do anymore work that I may have to undo to change that flexplate. Someone please fill me in. I would be forever grateful. After looking at everything and being sleep deprived, dumbass me, doesn't remember if all the teeth lined up together on the flex's or know the tooth count of them. I guess I basically first need to know if there is a situation where some 9 tooth starters and 10 tooth startes have the same flexplate applicatin.
Thanks in advance and I apologize if this F-150 post is out of line, but I'd have to wait days for a reply anywhere else on the web. And I have got to get my garage secure and this truck finished today
Best Regards,
Roger
