crash in cali

I don't think the driver of the truck should be charged. i think there will be paperwork for sure, but from my perspective I can't see any reason for charges to be laid.

ban the sport? ban prerunners? you're kidding right?
Yes, it was a tragic accident but, do we really need more of this type of legislation protecting us from anything bad that can happen at the cost of American taxpayers? If anything I think the responsibility falls on the event organizers (even if it was non sanctioned) for not controlling the crowd, watch the video posted above, there were people all over the track and nothing to protect the ones that weren't. Common sense, it seems to me, could have saved this from happening. Better standards and regulations are needed but you shouldn't have to tell people that its dangerous and not a good idea to be standing on or that close to a race course.

So since debris hurt people in the stands at a NASCAR race and a NHRA event, they should be banned??????

Freakin people these days are always lookin to sue somebody/company/event moderator when it was THEIR CHOICE to be there.

Did the driver force them people to be there? Did they get forced there by anybody?
They chose to attend the event, stood in a STUPID spot.....plain & simple!

Hate it for the families, but as stated above, COMMON SENSE would tell ya not to be that close.

I think California needs to ban this sport or have better standards. Or just BAN pre-runners altogether.

WTF?? That is the dumbest thing I have heard in quite a while and then to compare this accident to ILLEGAL street racing!!

I attend these races all the time. People need to use common sense in these situations. We watch from about 50ft away and hang out in the back of our truck in law chairs. Its pretty common to see at the races and other offroad areas, people way too close to the action. But again, common sense needs to be exercized. Banning the sport or expecting somebody to put up 100 miles of concrete barriers is just ridiculous. It was a terrible accident and my heart goes out to all of the victims and thier families and of course the driver. I cannot imagine what he is going through right now.

I wonder if Cali has any laws like New Hampshire about "Inherintaly Dangerous Activities."

For example, you you choose to skydive and sign a waiver, the operator is off the hook because you CHOSE to participate. It's the same deal with horseback riding.
I believe something like this applies in this case. The spectators knew the the risk, yet they chose to do it anyway.

Now I don't know the laws of California at all (aside from the ones about semi's), so I might be off base here.

.........After jumping it rolled sideways into a crowd of hundreds of people standing with no barriers next to the course. The crowd, which included children, was standing within 10 feet of the track. Fans said the "rockpile" is one of the most popular areas to stand because they can get close to cars as they launch into the air, and no guard rails hold them back. One person was decapitated.

I'm sorry but this is another one for the Darwin Awards.

As much as I hate to see people hurt, I do agree that this is one for the 2010 Darwins!

Whenever a boxer is killed in the ring - a very rare occassion - there are people who want to ban the sport. Where are those people now? This "practice of stupidity" is far worse than anything done inside a ring. Not only do the drivers die, but so do the spectators. If any "sport" (snicker), is to be banished it should be these types of events. The promoters have so little regard for the safety of the spectators they're ripping-off that they won't spend a couple of hundred dollars to put up a stinking fence at a safe distance.Although I feel for the families of the dead, they used very poor judgement and put themselves in harm's way.

HOW MANY TIMES MUST THIS HAPPEN BEFORE PROPER PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN. This happened in my town less then 5 years ago and 10 PEOPLE WERE KILLED here in MOUNT VERNON, IL then. It's funny how we all hear these promises on how it is safe, isn't it. IF IT CAN'T BE CONTROLLED, SAVE A FEW LIVES AND PUT IT TO AN END.

:clapping::clapping:

survival of the fittest i guess, the spectators should be careful and keep inmind that this could happen.

It was even a Ranger...

For the truck or the crowd?

Now everybody's going to think that all Ranger drivers go around the desert flying off jumps and killing people!!!

Seriosly, it was a sad AND tragic event. If people want off-road racing in a controlled environment, bring back the Mickey Thompson stadium series.

All ralley and offroad racing is over populated the spectaters know were the course and usually crowed up the turns and the jumps so they can see the action. It should be stand at your own risk. Not the drivers fault. Misshaps will happen.

Group B was banned for this very reason. Hell, right before it was banned, most of the drivers refused to even get back in the cars and complete the season. Most of it was due to an RS200 having to go off it's racing line to avoid a cameraman on the crest of a hill, and that ruined his line for the next corner. He could not brake or steer to avoid the crowd that was on the outside of the next corner. He killed 3 people and injured 31, and many drivers quit that day. Later on that season an Audi crashed and both driver and co-driver burned to death before they could escape, and that was the final blow to the class.
