new here and having a BLANK of a time.
2002 ranger 2wd 2.3l 5sp
has sat for a long time. i have checked all the fuses to be sure they are good. check
gas was bad so i removed the bed, siphoned the fuel, cleaned it a bit and replaced it with good fuel with some stabilizer in it.
had to replace the fuel pump while in the tank
verified the fuel pump works (bed is still off and i can hear it when i turn the key)
engine turns easily but will not catch
i can spray carb cleaner in the air intake and the engine will try to catch but will not stay running
I have pressurized the fuel by turning the key.
I have depressed the button in the schrader valve to clear out the old fuel multiple times and it seems to be pretty clear but it wont catch.

I have no tools to separate the fuel line from the fuel rail

I am at a loss and would love some sound advice on how to get this little beater (you should see the poor thing) started.

thanks in advance for any help.

Guy

My first thought was a dead ECU but if it's trying to catch, then that's probably not it. Do you have an OBD reader?

i do have access to one but have not thought to try it. I have been you tubing and need to check the inertia switch just to check it. I havent checked that yet.

I’m moving this to the 4-cyl engine section…

oh lordy. that should be fun to fix
Couldn't you just wire the fuel pump in reverse and let that suck them clean?

I'm kidding. That was sarcasm. Do not do this.

It's seems to me that what your saying is the truck is trying to start when you spray some starting fluid into the intake.

What I would like to know is are you using enough starting fluid to get it started?

Do you have anyone that you can get to help you?
If so, have them turning the key while you spray the starting fluid.
If you've already tried this I truly understand.
Or if you have the means to turn it over while you spray the starting fluid at the same time that's good too.

To my thought at this time you just want to see if it will really start and run at all.
I'm thinking with what you've said that You can do that with the starting fluid but I would not try to run it for a long time that way.
However if it does actually start this way it might just get gas up and through the injectors and then you should be able to start it the way it should be started to begin with.

Not saying you have to do this the way I just suggested it's just that a suggestion.
Okay there's my 2 cents.
Let us know what happens next Guy. Thanks.

F.Y.I. everyone I don't even know what a " OBD reader " is.

I'm taking it that was directed towards me.
I'm also taking it that it's a code reader.
But don't know what OBD stands for let alone OBD2.

The big takeaway is that because OBD1 was not standard (either in what code meant what, or what the connector was even shaped like between different brands), it was a flop, so OBD2 came out with a standard chart of codes and a standard plug... P0301 is a 'misfire in cylinder 1' if you have a ford, dodge, chevy or a gursmumpsfulerumph.

And if you are ever trying to diagnose one of these modern OBD2 computer controlled babies without a code reader, you are fighting a fight with both hands tied behind your back.... you need at least a cheap little code reader. (Ford at least you can do a voltmeter and count the needle twitches for OBD1.)

So the tool I posted in my thread a few days ago is some kind of OBD2 reader I'm taking it.

And thanks Brain for explaining to me what it is

No problem, I was hoping I wasn't too preachy or came off as a smart ass.... I can come off as a know it all a-hole pretty easy sometimes.

Back to the OP's issue if I can steer us... How bad was the gas? - that will tell us if you definitely clogged the injectors.
If it just didn't look right and smelled a little off it might still flow through.
If it smelled sweet and rotten at the same time (like a big bucket of rotten fruit), was orange and chunky...
Well then yeah it would clog the schrader - should have removed the schrader core not just depressed it, and it will clog the injectors.... Time to go to harbor freight and get a couple tools so you can open up the fuel rail and clean it all out.

First I'd watch a video or two to get ideas about how to make an cleaning fitting and the general process.

I'd run through a junkyard on the way and chop off a 1' wiring pigtail for an injector as long as I was out and about first, one spare injector (so I could have it in hand at home depot next)...
Then homedepot/parts store for a couple bits and bobs (fitting/tubing) to make a fuel injector cleaner adapter and a can of carb cleaner...
