I picked up a 2002 ranger 4.0 the other day. 138k miles. When I bought it the fuel pump didn't work. Replaced with a new one. Right after replacing it, the engine started, ran rough, rattled, sputtered out and died. Hasn't started since

Have verified fuel is being pumped to the the fuel rails and checked spark.

I pulled and replaced the plugs, it seems the engine flooded on the drivers side. So I unplugged the fuel pump relay and cranked it over with the plugs still out.

Still won't start and won't even hit on starting fluid

Bad timing chain/tensioner/guide maybe? It does seem to puff air back out of the intake a bit

That engine is old enough (generation wise) that the guides may have broken. It is also possible the tensioners were never changed. So the timing chains could have jumped. I can't tell you how to diagnose it but I can direct you to videos on how to replace the guides and chains. It's a real job and you will need some special tools to do it. Amazon sells the tools for what cheaper than you can get them elsewhere other than maybe ebay.

For tensioners. Ford and Cloyes are good ones to get. The driver's side one is a bit of a bear to get to. You can change it if you get the intake hose, throttle body, and thermostat housing out of the way. Pulling the intake makes the job easier but then, you are pulling the intake. The passenger side one is on the rear of the head and easy accessed though the wheel well. Make sure you check for oil leaks. The driver's side one had to get tweaked a little bit more than the specified torque so that the crush washer would seal.

To diagnose jumped chains on a 4.0L SOHC... pull the plugs... run a compression test.

Update. Ran a couple tests, determined I had either broken chain or jumped timing. Pulled the engine tore it down and found that the chain either jumped teeth or the sprockets slipped on the drivers side. Valves did contact the pistons but a leak down test told me they weren't bent. Put all new timing components in it and she runs good now. Thanks for the input guys

Great job and sounds like you were fortunate not having any damage. Great job!!
