cracked crossmember

Just bought my 2002 4x4 supercab with 4.0L and automatic. Knew it had been in an accident, but took my chances and got a good deal. Regarldess, found out that right where the forward lower a-arm bolt goes through the crossmember, there is a crack in the crossmember. I am going to pull the bolt and weld it up, but am concerned with the torsion bar. Do I have to unload the torsion bar? If so, how do I do it? Thanks!

Yes..... you have to unload the tension on the torsion bar before you release any component that is supported by it such as the control arm. The torsion bar is a spring and it is under tension this is what supports the suspension and sets the front ride height. I don't own a torsion bar Ranger but in my Isuzu Trooper you unload the tension on the torsion bar by loosening the adjust arm bolt at the back of the torsion bar it normally goes up from the bottom through the cross member into the adjuster arm and attaches to a beefy nut of sorts. Its also a good idea to raise the vehicle and get it supported on a good set of jack stands because without the torsion bars attached your front suspension will have nothing holding it up. And one last thing have some beefy breaker bar and maybe a length of pipe for leverage as torsion bar bolts are notorious for being tough to loosen up. Spray it with a good penetrating fluid several times over a few days to to have the best chance of getting it out without breaking your back or the bolt itself. Hope this is of some use to you.
