im in the planning of a sas for my 2wd edge. (i know everyone is going to say just trade it and get a 4x4. i dont want any kind of electronically controlled 4 wheel drive and i dont want ifs so a 2wd is the perfect truck at the moment.) well anyways i want to do leaf springs (i like leafs and im not going to do a 3 or 4 link up front.) so im going to use the wrangler front end. should i use the wrangler springs? most important questions are what do i do about the steering and what about a drive shaft from the tcase to the front diff. my ranger is an 04 and has a weird ass rack and pinion that i dont know what to do with. will the splines match up from most jeep/ford front shafts and i just have to have them lengthened? thanks for the help.

The rack and pinion setup will all have to be cut out and put to bare frame.

As far as driveshaft, you will probably have to get a custom one made. It just all depends on your transfercase you use.

Most people graft a toyota steering box into their frame.

Or an older Ranger one. the Ranger had steering box until 97. so there plenty "fairly new" ones around.

I'd much rather run the ranger box than a yota box. The rangers used the same box as f 150 - 350s.

Yeah but there is no room for it on the new rangers that have IFS a-arm style suspension.....thus they use the yota box and bolt it to the outside of the driver's side frame rail

i planned on using a manual tcase out of the early 90's explorers. the drive shaft would basically be the same as whatever people do when they swap in a cherokee axle. same axle just with leafs. im just not sure on diameter or spline count.

Ive seen ranger boxes used on 98+ SAS before and they got it to work without any fuss.

I'm using a mid 80s F150 box on my 02 Ranger just had to fab a mount and drill 3 holes plus reinforce the frame.

And those are the same boxes as the rangers. My truck has a full size broncho box on it and it bolted right up.

what about an on the axle hydraulic ram steering setup? ive never seen one used on road before but seen it on trail rigs.would be easy alignment and provide less restriction to articulation... not that im going to need a whole lot of articulation.

The boxes are cheap as hell too...I priced a steering box for my truck and it was under $150 remanned

Purely hydraulic steering is a big DOT violation and is not legal to drive on the road.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't do it :icon_rofl:

i can get a jy steering box with a 30 day warranty for 25 bucks.

i got my front end out of an 84 cj with a 304 today for 100 bucks including the steering hubs. leaf springs are 20 a side but i have to figure out what ones ill need first. t case is gonna cost me 110 without a core to return and the tranny i got last month cost me 110 :)
