Coronavirus

I've got my neices staying with me during the day for the next 2 weeks while schools are closed. The schools sent home work but it effin insane, its not just some home work its literally 4-6 hours of work per day. I understand they are trying to keep them educated and what not but do they not understand that parents can't work full time and be full time teachers too. So when this is over my neices grades will slip cause im not a teacher and me and their parents simply don't have time to sit down and make them do 6 hours of crap each day.

I don't really get how that is supposed to work.

I haven't gotten to that point yet of parenthood (first is 4.5mo) but there are a lot of kids that can't stay home by themselves. So they are going to go to daycare which is probably less sanitary than school. Like ours, there is the infant room, the toddler room and then the everybody else room. Not near as compartmentalized as a regular school.

They are talking about closing school for 4 weeks, few parents can take a freaking month off to stay home with their kids.

PA shut down sit in dining as well. Recommended not having gatherings of 50 people or more. Pretty much everything invloving groups has been cancelled voluntarily. My local VFW is trying to balance keeping their employees paid and not bankrupting themselves trying to keep them paid since people are staying home.

If the word on the street is correct, the virus infection rate will be at it’s peak in June. Anything that can be done to slow that down so the health system can cope is being tried or recommended.

It’s going to be a long year.

We started stocking up back in Jan, and our kids/grandkids also did. I doubt many of you went through the shortages during the 1963 missile crisis
or the shortages during several outbreaks of the 70's and 80's.

Lived just outside of Nenana, Alaska in 63-Just south of Clear AFB, were Dad was a Civilian Radar Tech--Cubin Missile Crisis hit, and the base closed for three days. Dad didn't come home, and base officials wouldn't tell us anything--Mom was a wreck, and for those three days, things were pretty tough!!
Was so rugged/wild in the area, the school master came out one day, and with a rife, shot a Lynx that came into the school yard, and attacked the sled dogs!!!!

Switzerland has banned prostitution during the outbreak. S**t just got real...

We lived in South Fla, Dade County. Remember riding our bikes to a large fenced field in North Dade and you could see the Hawk Missile batteries set up along with the portable radar units.
Would watch the flights of F-8's, F-100's and F-105's taking off/landing at Opa Locka Airbase. Only fighters, runways weren't long enough for the big stuff.
Everything was closed, nothing could be had at stores. Still went to school and practiced the "Drop and Cover" every day.

The planes would have been cool.

My kids will probably say the same thing about the F-15/16/18's we watch though...

Speaking of college, my day is suppose to graduate in May with her teaching degree. She's been putting in her required hours of student teaching so she can graduate, and she applied for a teaching position opening up in the district. But they've suspended classes, so she's not teaching. Not sure what they'll do yet, or if she'll graduate.

Plus, she's getting married in June in Ohio. Not sure right now how that's going to play out either.

So much uncertainty.

Definitely. We'll be sifting through the ripple effects of this for a very long time.

They have closed all restaurants and bars in NJ for dining in. Just take out or delivery now. This is insane. Two weeks ago this was all "under control" and would "magically go away". Now I cant eat a pizza, get drunk, or wipe my butt.

Our McDonald’s decided to seize the moment and redo their dining area. It has probably been in the works but it is good timing.

Hopefully we can get god if the picnic table crap they put in a few years ago...

Ohio is crazy... less than 50 cases and they closed bars, sit in restaurants, gyms, movie theaters anything with more than 50 people..... Schools are shut down until april and probably longer if this shit doesn't get better. That's what we know as of a few minutes ago.....

Sounds like a reasonable response IMO.

But what are all the employees of these places suppose to do? Considering most of the businesses effected are those with low income jobs those people almost certainly live paycheck to paycheck. The guy who sweeps up popcorn at the movie theatre probably needs that paycheck pretty damn bad. Small business owners are also usually stretched pretty thin. Having your corner bar or mom and pop restaurant closed for a month could mean your going out of business.

Also agreed on that note. There's no getting around significant secondary effects. Various bills have been introduced to try to help out with situations like that, but certainly nothing truly comprehensive.

With the capabilities of this country, had we started back then, we could have had a huge stockpile of the necessary equipment and medical supplies ready and on hand. Instead we're scrambling to play catch up.
But there's the rub - what capabilities? The largest hospital in the center of the nation's capitol does not have any N95 masks. Like all of our institutions, health care is an industry re-purposed to make money - if you manage to get some health care out of it well bully for you, but that is not what it's there for. There are lots of caring and capable people working within that industry, but they serve the corporations that have other goals. There are not enough extra beds, staff, equipment or supplies because that would be bad for profits.

We don't have masks, and likely don't manufacture them here. Setting up a plant would take investment which won't be forthcoming, at least not fast enough to matter.

I do believe this is going to expose the reality of the incompetence and corruption of many of our institutions, and it will be interesting to see what the impacts are.
