I haven't owned an automatic transmission since 1972, so they're a strange animal to me. I took a quick look at a friend's 97 2.3 Ranger that was dripping something from the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side, and as best as I could tell in the fading daylight is that a tranny cooling line is leaking.

The usual online sources don't seem to list complete transmission cooling line assemblies, so I guess the question is, what is the usual approach here? Replace the hard line with hose and fittings?

If it is a transmission cooling line then you can fix it with a length of hose and some clips. If it's a brake line then that's a different story.
