Coolant too low

I was mysteriously losing coolant in my '99 as well. Never a spot on the ground either. My temp guage fluctuated or didn't come up at all. Cab air was warm but never like it should be. I finally traced a leak to the left bank head gasket (4.0L). As with DanVB1's experience, the leak from the head gasket was falling on the exhaust manifold and burning off before leaving any tell-tale signs. One day I finally saw a drip that made it past the manifold. Apparently the head gasket was getting worse though I didn't know yet that it was a head gasket. At first I suspected a freeze plug. We traced it to the head gasket, though, with pressurized dyed water forced through the system. Have since replaced the head gaskets and what a difference! Not only with heat & defrosters, but the engine runs better too, and it should considering the computer is now getting good temp info. Well, just thought I'd share...

just a suggestion, i too kept having a small coolant level drop and had to top it off every month or so, couldn't find any drops or wetness anywhere on/around 94 4.0 engine. then one day i went to a store just a few miles away and i noticed a not so good smell and to make a long story short, when i got back home my temp gauge was over almost on hot and of course the steam and when i went to refill radiator it took almost 2 gals and when i looked under truck, i saw a steady stream of antifreeze runing down side of motor and found that my intake manifold had finally blown a gasket all the way. hope this may help someone.
