Hey, i need help. i have a 1998 ranger 4.0l w/ac. i did the timing cover water pump and all new hoses because everything was starting to seep. put it back together burped the system, ever since unless you have the ac on there is a constant boom in the system, you can feel it on the passenger side and its coming from the heatter core. Now if you turn the ac on which closes the heater valve stopping coolant flow to the heater core it stops. This has been going on consistantlly for about 6 months. im a pretty good back yard mechanic and cant figure it out. For has a TSB on it and the dealer says they havent really come across it. Does anybody have any ideas???? please help.. oh yeah and it does not looose coolant.

From Jason Alexander at explorerforum.com

AERA members have reported a temperature gauge fluctuation on 1995-2000 Ford 4.0L OHV engines. Along with this fluctuation, the customer may complain of a knocking or thumping noise as well.

This noise is most pronounced with the engine at normal operating temperatures and heard in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The noise is caused by steam formation in the cooling system. This noise is then transmitted through the heater hoses and heater core.

Ford offers a Coolant By-Pass kit to cure this problem. This kit increases the flow, which reduces steam formation in the cooling system. Refer to the chart listed below to get the correct By-Pass kit as it depends on the type of vehicle the customer has.

Maybe this will help. Sounds like you need part number F8PZ-8522-AA.

coolant boom

Thanks for the info. man!! i heard a little bit about this, when i spoke to the dealer they didnt have one in stock to look at. If its ordered of course you have to pay for it and this lovely kit is $120.00. He told me the kit only included a couple of t's some clamps and hose. So it would be cool if i had a picture or new some one that had an idea of how it may work. any ideas?

I haven't seen the kit, but I agree it would be nice to see a pic of it installed. It sounds like something you could fab up yourself...or, you could get one on your truck, take some pics and post them here!:D

does anyone have any pics of this system so maybe one could do it themselves????

soooo is it just like putting a loop in the heater hoses or how does it go in????anyone seen one actually installed in a ranger? mine is still thumping at times

finally i got rid of the boom........ewnt to the rad shop picked up a new rad cap and they gave me a coupl eof tips....started up truck took cap off to burp system and i then held a rag lightly over the rad so it doesn't puke all over the engine....i found that it was working slowly so to speed it up abit i jacked up the front a little and then put the tip of a flat head screw driver between the stop and the accelerator linkage so the revs came up to about 2K and the antifreeze flowed faster and the thermostat stayed open and then topped her up with fluid....now there is no more boom or temp gauge fluctuation:yahoo::yahoo:....
