Hi, I've been doing some research on this conversion and came across a lot of useful information but i'm looking for more. I've got a complete '00 ranger with the 4.0 SOHC and automatic (roll over). I'd like to put it into my '89 extended cab ranger. If i had to swop dashes over, would it fit? and would there be a way to disable/by pass the security system? and if some one can help direct me to a good write up with the SOHC conversion, share a link?

Thanks

If you swap over everything, computer, dash, column, wiring, etc, there wouldn't be a need to bypass the anti-theft system. You'd have taken all the hardware you need anyway.

The dash won't be bolt in, and the whole swap won't exactly be "turn key" since your 89 has a return type fuel system and the SOHC uses a returnless system. I'd just take everything including the fuel tank and lines if you can make it all line up.

The SOHC swap into a 1st gen requires a lot of cutting of the stock HVAC, more then the 5.0l swap. The best way to do it is to graft in the firewall from the '00. That will allow you to use the newer HVAC system and dash.

thanks for the reply, yeah i noticed that in the '00 the motor sits right up against the firewall in the back. does it need the HVAC system? i only need heat no AC.

You can find a heat only box (first or second gen will fit.), they arent that hard to find. That may give you the clearance that you need. I dont know for sure.

Is the frame straight on the 2000. Could you just put the body of your 89 on the 2000 frame? I don,t know how different the body mounts are, but may be worth doing if you have the time and money.

x2 on the body swap, even if the cab mounts don't line up exactly it would be easier to move body mounts than hack the firewall to make it fit. Also if you need more space for the engine you can add enough body lift to make it work. You would still have to mess with the dash to make the new one fit, overall seems like less of a hassle.

Yea the frame is straight on the 2000, good idea sounds easier than putting it into the '89 frame. I'll do some measuring to compare the two trucks when it gets warmer outside. we've had highs of -32F lately.
On a side note, i've been pretty busy with work and expecting my second son so the ranger project has been on the side for now but i do plan on doing something cool with the 2000 ranger

Thanks

If you really wanted to disable PATS, sniper tuners can do the job. They can handle ranger computers from 97 to 02 and would come in handy if you later plan on beefing up the 4.0

if the cab is an the same style cab ie standard cab to standard cab and it long bed to long bed or vs versa it will swap on ranger with out a hitch as per allen ( if i remeber right) i have seen a 92 ranger body on a 2001 frame and was told it bolted right on as well as the 2001 dash inthe 92 body (he also had a 4.0 sohc 5speed ) it was a low rider. i should have botten pics
