I trashed the converter and shaft by not having the converter seated right before bolting the trannie in. the trans is for a '96 2.3 and is the 4R44E.
as the trans is just a variant of the A4LD, will any A4LD converter and shaft fit? From any vehicle with the 'T' code on the door plate?
since there are no wires to the converter, I figure the 'lock up' is something that actually happens inside the trans, even thou it's called a 'lock up converter'.
or am I stuck with finding a year/engine specific part?
the local you-pull does not have the book that lists what fits what.

If you tried bolting the engine and trans without the converter being fully engaged you may have some more issues such as a broken pump gear or pump. The lock up is done in the converter. The input shafts should be the same. The converters are pretty much the same but you need to remember different engines require different stall speeds. The thing I don't remember is if all those converters use the same bolt pattern to the flexplate. If the pattern is same it will physically work but may not be the correct stall unless you find one for the same engine.
