I am having a hard time finding a transmission for my 5 speed '84 ranger 4x4 long bed. I see a lot more 4 speed transmissions out there, rather than 5 speed. My current transmission is a TK5. I know the 4 speed is a different length. Does anybody know the correct driveshaft length for TK-4 transmission with 4x4 in a long bed? My current driveshaft measures out at about 50". Does anybody know if the TK4 transmissions will fit with a 2.8 liter V6 engine?

a tk5 is just a tk4 with an overdrive tagged on the back. they share the same bellhousing and probably a lot of other parts

what is wrong with your current trans? rebuilding it would probably be much cheaper than modifying 2 driveshafts

Yeah, I am gradually coming to that conclusion. My reverse is almost gone. I can still back up as long as I am on flat pavement, but if there is any resistance at all it pops out of gear and grinds. I also have a little bit of whine in gear 1-3. After you hit 4th it runs great.

I have seen used transmissions coming in for about $300. I can do the swap as long as it is a direct match and I do not have to crack the case open. The lowest price I have seen for a rebuild job is over $600. I love the truck, but it is a question of how much to invest.
