confused

a gut called me today with a wtf moment. truck is a 90 ranger with a 5.0 and a c6 out of a 85 f250. the issue he is having is it will not shift into drive in 2wd. pull the xfer case into 4 hi and it shifts through all the gears. it also has a b&m floor shifter in it. any ideas?

Would there be a chance the xfer case is stuck in neutral, and not engaging 2hi? First thing that came to mind because my 1995 f150 used to miss 2hi from time to time. Just needed to fool with the linkage.
