Ok i'm confused on this. I really need to change my t case fluid. has 137k on it, previous owner sucked at maintenance. I've got people telling me i HAVE to put Mercon in, some saying i can Use Dex/Merc or Dex/Merc III. Well, what can i use? i just want the t case not to blow up. i don't care for synthetics, they don't blow my skirt up. I just want the easiest route...as far as i know there is just Dex/Merc III in the Tranny right now. its a 5 speed. thanks.

dex/merc 3 will work fine

Yes Dex/Merc 3 is ok to use. Ive been using it in my tranny and tcase for years without problem.

I've put Mercon III in my transmission. Haven't had a problem.

But because I have access to this information (and because I actually haven't checked yet LOL)

1997 Ranger/Aerostar Ford factory service manual says:

Transmission AND Transfercase:
Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX (or -DDX) or equivilent.

(Honestly I'd just use Mercon III and call it good)

whats the difference between Dex/Merc III and just dex/Merc? we have loads of dex/merc around but if i need III i have to go get some...

First of all there is no such thing as Mercon III. (I don't care WHAT AllanD says) It's a huge pet peeve of mine when people say Mercon III. It is simply called Mercon!!

...Which is the same thing as Dexron III. "Dexron" is a registered trademark of General Motors. "Mercon" is a registered trademark of Ford. They literally have different names for the same thing. Which is why you see "Dexron III/Mercon."

Dex/Merc is simply an abbreviation for Dexron III/Mercon.

it's all the same dang thing... they just update the formulation over time, you generally only have one option, there's pretty much the dex/merc and old type F in the stores, I wouldn't stress over it

Mercon V is synthetic. Ford has changed alot of their recommendations over to Mercon V. For the M5OD, just use the Dexron III/Mercon and try not to overanalyze it.

Think I'll just stick to what my dip stick and manual says to use. I haven't had a lubrication issue using it since I bought it and it's got 262000 km's on the clock.

i know what it means. I was just writing it as its on the bottle. i'm pretty sure everyone got the point.

Hmmm. ok i'll just stop at advantage tomorrow and get it from them. thanks guys.

got it changed today. My book and auto values book said the same thing. Just regular Mercon Fluid. No Mercon V or anything else. So i got that changed today. and will be changing the Tranny later. takes the same stuff. thanks for the input guys.
