ok so ive got a 93 3.0 ranger with 76000mi. i just bought the truck about 2000mi ago, it ran kinda rough when i got it, so i put on new plugs, wires, rotor, dist. cap, coil, cleaned iac maf, new fuel pump and fuel filter, no vaccuum leaks, pcv valves working properly. the truck still idled a little rough but better and didnt stall on startup, it also had a surge between 2000 and 3000rpm. it wasnt horrible so i could drive it, wed. on the way to work it started poping (backfiring) so i pulled over and it would barely stay running, i limped to work and somehow made it home, had to keep it reved over 1500rpm. went to work on it today and had a stream of fluid behind it and puddle underneath, checked oil it was fine, checked trans and its empty, i started the truck and its still running very rough and wont move in any gear but i drove it wed to where its sitting now. so is my tranny shot and causing my motor to run funny.... or is the motor and tranny shot... any ideas of where to start? thanks.

sounds like the motors is the issue. i wont know how it is messed up till i get a good look at the fluid. you may want to pull the plugs and see how they look then run a compression test.

i had a similar issue, the motor ran like crap and the trans kept loosing fluid. it ended up being the modualtor valve on the trans, it was sucking fluid out of the trans and into the intake and burning it through the engine. it sounds like you have covered every aspect of tune up on this truck, but have you checked/set the base timing yet?

ive never checked the timing. i dont get home till well after dark so i probibly wont fool with it till this friday cause im off. ill try to pull the plugs and see what they look like before then and ill look into checking the timing. thanks

plugs look good, light tan colored. comp. test tomorrow. does anyone make a handheld code reader for the early style plugs obd1 i think? also its idleing fine but as soon as i tough the gas it starts missing...

if it is sucking tranny fluid then probably as you go to increase rpm yo are also increasing vacuum in the engine which in turn suck on the tranny fluid a little harder giving you the hesitation. that age and even only 76,000 mi or so you might (might) look at a timing chain and gear ithink ford is still using the fiber cam gear. which will deteriatre (sp) after time.
