Computer swap 1988 into 1987

My original ECM was "HD"
The ECM i pulled from rusty #1 was "HD"
The O reiley ECM was "HH".

But you are right there seems to be no real reason to them. I forget the number on the 88 ECM but i think it was "HD" too.

For a 1988 Ford light truck these numbers would be the same E8TF-12A650-
Regardless of engine size or trans type

Ford still uses 12A650 as the part number for a PCM, any model any year

I knew the 88 had the "E8" prefix to say it was an 88 but IIRC it was the same otherwise as the 87 ECMs?

Yes, 1987 Ford light truck would be the same except for the 8 would be a 7, E7TF-12A650-

Around 1990 Rangers, BIIs were switched to 7 as the 3rd digit instead of T, so F17F-12A650- would be the PCM for a 1991 Ranger or BII, any engine size or trans type would use these same numbers
I think Explorers used 7 for the "model number" as well

Ford change these prefixes in 1999, X was 1999, Y was 2000, and Ranger model was now L5
1998 would be F87F-12A650-
YL5F-12A650- was 2000 Ranger PCM
2L5F-12A650- would be a 2002 Ranger PCM
