my sound quit working and it gives me this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

help!!!!

Do you know if you use a sound card, or is it integrated audio.

Chris

Look in your control panel;
Under system, there's is probably a tab for 'Hardware' and a button for Device Manager. On ME/98/95 systems, this is a little different.. Not sure about Vista.

Does the audio card appear with an explanation point or something hinting that is not functioning?

If it is, you might try to re-install the driver. It will either have a self installer or it might have a bundle of files. If it's a self installer, delete the bad device first, and simply re-install to see if that fixes it.

If it's a bundle of files, extract to a location that you will remember, go back to the device manager, click properties on the device in question, click the driver tab, then the update driver button. Point it to the location where you extracted the files, and you should be allowed to click 'OK' if it sees an .inf file. From there, it should install.

There should be something complaining about the audio device in the device manager though. If it's not.... Hmm... Make sure it's enabled in the BOIS if it's on-board?

yeah, the Psycho guy has some good advice. If it is an actual sound card and not motherboard audio, check to make sure it is firmly seated in the PCI slot.

If it is Vista, go to the windows button (start) and select the control panel. then there is an icon for the device manager. Make sure you have the control panel to classic view...from there it is just like XP/ME/98/95 after you click the "windows needs your permission to continue" screen that will pop up when you access teh device manager..

Yeah, what they said, make sure it is functioning properly, may need to reinstall the drivers, if it is Vista, go to the Problem Reports and Solutions in the Control Panel, Vista has probably already found the driver(s) for you...

it says my digital output is taken by another media or some crap like that...all drivers have checked out ok

you may want to run an anti-virus...

i remember one time when my computer was saying the same thing and my mother (the comp guru of our family) told me to run anti-virus because whatever the virus may be it could be trying to occupy your sound...

you know, just to be a pain in your side

Do you have a USB audio device plugged in like a USB headset or similar device? If so unplug it and try again.

OK check this
in the control panel under the sound and audio panel
click the audio tab.
Under the sound play back
check the device listed it may have gotten changed by another program and needs to be switched back manually.

smokey-----you are the coolest dude in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any time.
I see that one every so often. I own my own computer shop.

Yeah, that happens quite a bit...especially when you install new or download programs...glad you got the answer you needed...almost always something simple...
