reveals 180+ p.s.i. on all cylinders except #4 which is @ 175. No leak-downs detected but , does this sound high ? The outer white guage is p.s.i. on my scale but .... does this sound high ? What am I missing here ?

I'd say that your compression is very good. No worries here, compression wise.
with 1 cylinder down to 175psi is well within the "normal" deviation. book states that the low cylinder would have to be down to 135psi with others at 180psi

why do you ask??

Is this coming off a fresh rebuild?? or how tired is it?

poor gas mileage

Still chasin' that one down. Had the ruel rail off & found no injector problems.

Did the compression test with engine cold, upper manifold off & inertia switch unplugged to rule out a cracked head / bad gasket scenario. Right at 145,000 miles now.

o2 sensor has been banged around from recent exhaust work. Cats are definately not clogged. Air & coolant sensors recently replaced, EGR working properly. Got the gut feeling it's not going closed loop, or the computer (EEC IV) itself is bad.

Sound familiar to anyone ? Mechanic used a code reader but gets no signal at the diagnostics plug so I'm gonna try the self test using a test light.

Just glad the engine is solid & that I found all the help & good advice here on the forum ! ! ! Other than "flooded" symptoms at cold start, it runs fairly strong, doesn't use or burn any oil to speak of. Just a fuel HOG... Rich, smelly exhaust & avg. consumption is 8 to 10 mpg's.

SOunds like you covered a lot of ground.
8-10mpgs:bawling:

what about the MAP sensor??
what kind of fuel pressure are you getting?
I'll prolly get corrected...but don't think the O2 sensor comes into play on cold start?
vacuum lines are all good? and yes connections and grounds also

how does it act/start with spout plug removed...on a cold start?
does it start normally on a warm start??

FPR... wouldn't ya know

Tank & pump were just replaced, Dorman quick connects on the new fuel filter, had the rail off & checked the injectors...been drivin' me NUTS ! ! !

New exhaust from cat back, plugs, cap, rotor while they were all easily accessible. Yup, to say the least I've covered alot of ground. Code reader wouldn't work & had no guage for fuel pressure but since the whole fuel system was new I ordered a FPR. Turned out to be the cheapest part I've installed so far ($25 from Autozone) and wouldn't ya know it..

Ba Da Bing ! ! ! Runs & performs better than it has in the past year that I've owned it. I remember IMenriched saying that 90% of fuel problems result from the regulator, and it was the one thing I overlooked.

Didn't know a thing about fuel injection when I started this project but between the Haynes manual & largely from this forum I've got a much better understanding of what's going on. Thanks for all the help ! If I put a Ranger Station bumper sticker on it I'm hoping to gain another 20 horsepower !

well I really don't remember saying that....but what a difference it made with your situation.
