I've ran into i guess you'd call it a delima. I'm stuck between deciding whether i want to spend the money on a cat-back dual exhaust system from magnaflow for 567$ which it is all stainless is why im guess its so costly, or just getting a friend to do the aluminized steel exhaust with two flowmaster 40 series mufflers from the cat back. I dont know whether spending the money and doing it once is worth it on the stainless, or just spending the cheaper amount a couple of times each time the aluminized steel system rusts out???

Any ideas or tips on what to do??

Also why everytime i mention to an exhaust place, for instance say national muffler, they say theyll bend the exhaust for me and put it on but absolutely wont touch the headers??? theyll build exhaust from the headers back but wont touch them, no one seems like they want to mess with them?

I'd go with aluminized.

It doesn't rot out THAT fast, and it's unlikely you'd have to fully replace it twice in the time you have it. One thing that will go a long way is spray paint the weld seams afterward. I've only seen one shop actually do this. It looks 10x better immediately after the job is done and it will go a long way to protect the welds which are usually the first place to rust out.

headers are pretty tough to build, and even harder to build correctly. It's well beyond the skill level typically required of an every day exhaust shop worker.

Looks like the Rangers you have a pretty new, why are you wanting to replace the Exhaust?

Is it already rusting away? Or are you just looking for better sound?

Im looking for alittle more rumble, id call it, just abit more sound. it doesnt have much to it but im not looking for the exhaust just to give it horsepower, i just am not a real fan of single swept side exhaust which came stock on it.

I wasnt looking to build them, i wanted to buy them, just no one wants to put them on. im guessing due to getting them to seel right with no leaks. i had a buddy that didnt get his seeled and the engine caught on fire and totalled the thing. id hate for that to happen.:bawling:

If all your looking for is sound, you don't need to replace the entire system, just install an aftermarket muffler in place of the stock one. A flowmaster 40, or any chambered muffler for that matter will sound good. Summit Racing carries a muffler made by Thrush, it's a chambered muffler, almost an exact copy of the flowmaster 40, and it's only like 25$

oh, sorry about the misunderstanding.

Even then, I'd probably say replacing the manifolds with headers would be more of a nuts and bolts mechanic job than an exhaust shop. They're used to cutting off a piece of pipe, bending and welding in a new one. They don't take stuff apart much or really ever work on anything that requires much disassembly or working in tight spaces.

Have you already bought headers? If you're just looking for sound, I would leave the manifolds alone. They aren't worth the money or the trouble unless you need the performance and have the engine tuned to take advantage. They can also increase noise in a bad way, the tubing is often so thin it allows some sound into the engine bay and it's not a nice rumbly exhaust note.

By trouble, I mean both the difficulty in installation and the maintenance. They require periodic retorqueing of the bolts to prevent the gasket from blowing out.

nah i just wanted alittle more sound, maybe a little added power if it helps at all.

change components of the system not the whole thing, far easier and cheaper than the whole thing at one time, what kind and year of trk is this?

ive been running aluminized pipe on mine for a few years now (in the rusty pacific northwest no less) and its holding up just dandy so far. i have some minor oxydation on the pipes, enough to discolor them, but you can still see bare metal.

yeah, i just didnt know if the better route would be to spend the extra cash and go stainless so i dont have to mess with it ever again, and its warrantied which im all for, so i know if it messes up i can still get my moneys worth and itll be fixed. but aluminized is less than half the price....

if you dont see much snow/ice & SALT you shouldnt have too much problems out of it, but if you do id def go aluminized, stainless welds still dont like salt i hate to say. friend of mine in pa bought a stainless exhaust and the salt ate the welds in one winter, needless to say he was pissed, but the pipes were the prettiest thing on the trk after that winter anyway.

yeah i live in WV. we see abit of salt, thats why i cant run my chrome wheels in the winter:annoyed: but i figure ill just go with the aluminized. i cant see myself with the bill of 567$ for an exhaust when i can get the same thing in aluminized for under 200. just not the namebrand.

Thanks for the advice.

2 1/2 is too big it makes it hollow, 2 1/4 actually sounds better, its a lil louder but helps out.
