i have a 96 explorer 4.0 ohv swaped into the ranger and have been thinking about the comp cam i think its the 422....the cam with the half inch lift on exhaust and intake. just wondering if anyone thinks the cam is worth the 300 bucks that has done it or if the 4.0 would benefit from something else more. thanks

Hi, a couple things came to mind. are you doing a build up? or just thinking about placing in the cam to see what happens? If you are going to be "just" placing in the cam you are asking for a heap of probs. If you are doing a build then do more research into the 422. I run the 410 and like the performance from it, however, it did come with its own set of head aches.

The camshaft in question is a high rpm camshaft. You will LOSE a lot if you are simply driving on the street normally. If you have oversize tires you will lose even more..
On the other hand if you have changed the rear gearing so the engine will stay above 3,000 rpm you might like the camshaft.

im sitting on 35's and 8 inches of lift. 410 gears manual trans its a daily driver that i beat on on the weekends and try not to get into tooo much trouble on the road. well with the 410 cam what problems did you run into? i just need some more oomf out of the ohv. i used to have the sohc swapped in it but i broke timing chains 2 times, and am fed up with that engine. just trying to gain a little back from what i lost by going to the ohv. are rockers or headers a better thing to put in than the cam? i will be tuning the computer if i get the cam i have obd2 all hooked in.

"with the 410 cam what problems did you run into?"

I did a complete rebuild, and I didn't do enough homework on what was needed with the cam swap. I wasn't aware of the need to retune the ecu and from the start of the break in I was getting 'CEL' codes all over the place that didn't happen before. The fuel milage went postal and the motor was burning real rich. ( i am still waiting for the tune) obd1 is harder to get a tune for where I live. (and I have had to relearn to drive keep the truck at a constant speed under 60 to conserve fuel) however, when i want to pass a car or tromp on it she lets me know that its time to run. I also had to learn that this cam turns an average 1900/2100 rpm, something i wasn't ready for. I should have reasearched this aspect greater before the build. (live and learn). on these threads there is a ton of discussions about these 2 shafts, may I suggest you use the "search" option ^up top^ and type in 410 cam / 422 cam and read what has been written about. You didn't answer if you are tearing out and doing a rebuild or just a out and in swap. I guess the major of my probs actually in here came from people that were trying to help, however, they have not done this build and tossed me all over the place in different directions and it never occured to them that with this cam swap it was a tune that I was needing. so to actually say I had probs is a bit misleading. From all the reading about the 422 that I have done before the build that shaft is more intended for a higher compression build, as BigJim was stating.

There ya go!

The real problem comes to light.. Sitting on 35's and only a 410 gearing. I'm sitting on 30's and have the same 410 gears... Mine runs fine. Your problem isn't the engine..IT IS THE TIRES! So go back to the 30's or make a huge jump in gearing.. I'm thinking 4:88 might be a bit too high. Maybe even lower would make you a happy driver again.
