Greetings!

Going on a fun wheeling trip to Flat Nasty in a weekend or so and I still dont have a winch. I'm looking to get a properly rated come along soonish and I every time I tell my friend that they laugh.

Just curious if anyone had any good stories, helpful hints or whatever you feel like putting down. Most of my friends have electronic winches, so I'm not too terribly worried about getting permanently stuck...but until that those 6 lil pingpong balls pop up in the right order...I'm stuck with a regular bumper and a bit of elbow grease.

Thanks!

Well, I used to have a '97 TJ on 31" tires, 4-cyl. I left it at a friend's house and we took his lifted Sidekick out wheelin. Down a frozen trail we got it mired in some mud bad, and couldn't get out. We called his dad to come get us in my Jeep, and an hour later we met him at the head of the trail. Well, I immediatey broke through the ice with my passenger side tires and got hopelessly stuck. I even went WOT back and forth, and made a track in the ice, but couldn't get enough bite to get on top. A fourwheeler stops by, a Foreman 450 with some nasty ITP mud tires, like, 3" lugs nasty. He couldn't do a thing, and says he knows where a come-along is. Two hours later, it yarded me out like a toy. Ten minutes later, I dragged the suzuki out like it was a trailer.

used a come along to cinch a friends axle housing back together after his weld on the knuckle broke from where he cut and turned the axle... got us back to camp and got it properly fixed the next day

i've used one for years. biggest one you can get that i know of is a 4 ton. that's what i use. you can do a lot with one of those and a farm (hi-lift) jack. but safety is very important using any of those tools. just my $.02.

Me and a buddy were going down a slightly muddy road in my 2wd 4cylinder ranger when we spotted a mudhole we had gone through before in my fullsize 4wd chevy. I thought i could make it through if i had a little head start but it turned out i had bit off a little more than i could chew with a 2wd, in fact my front tires were on solid ground but the back half was in the mud deep enough that the end of the exhaust pipe was halfway under water. The road went through a pine thicket and i spotted a big enough pine tree about 30 feet in front of my truck. I pulled out my trusty come along and my tree strap and rigged it up to the tree and my truck. A couple cranks later she was sitting on dry ground. I wouldn't have even thought about trying to get through that mudhole in my 2wd if i hadnt of had my come along with me. That thing is a lifesaver. I havent tested it on my full size truck yet but i know it will yank the ranger out of mud like its a matchbox car.

I use a come along when I know I'm hitting some questionable trails. It has saved me a few times. It is not really heavy duty, only a 1 ton. But with some shackles, extra cable, and tow straps; I can get pretty creative. Most of times when I do get stuck, is because of the wet mud or clay. I don't use it to pull the Ranger up a slope.
