Hi,

New to the forum and in desperate need of help with my ignition/distributor on a 1974 Cologne V6 engine.

I recently picked up this engine for a project, but failed to notice/know that I needed an ignition box for it as well. The distributor looks like an old Duraspark and has three wires, black, purple, and orange coming from the bottom.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to wire this up? I've heard that an HEI module could be used instead of the stock ignition box. Anyone knew the wiring for this or perhaps the wiring for the stock box if I can find one?

A more basis points-style distributor would be even better and easier for me to hook up and maintain. Is there an earlier distributor which could be substituted here? Anyone have an idea where one could be bought or should I look on-line? Doubt that there are any left in the junk yards around here.

Any help at all with this would be HUGELY appreciated, I'm totally lost ! ! !

Thank you !

TC

You can use an orange (or gold) Mopar box with it as well. I put the dizzy out of a 200 Fairlane motor into the 200 in my '65 Mustang using the orange Mopar box. I could help you with wiring that up.

The Mopar box can be used with stock points as well. There will no longer be coil-charging levels of current going through the points so they won't burn. The box uses them only for tempo so they don't even need to be adjusted properly, and as they wear, you won't notice. I would not go back to just points. I think the Mopar boxes are $20 brand new or thereabouts.

There are plenty of diagrams on the web for this.

And you really can buy them for $20. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/181802694895?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82

One difference with what I have is that I am not using a ballast resistor--just the resistor wire that is built into the Mustang's harness. If you burn out a coil, you might try a ballast, but I haven't. The ballast resistor was used to protect the coil because of high saturation times at low rpms with point-type ignitions. Since the coil saturation is controlled by the electronic module, it shouldn't be a problem.
