Learned something new today. Daycare closes when school is canceled due to inclimate weather. But if they go to remote learning that counts as a day of school thus school wasn't canceled thus you either drag your little kid to daycare when it is deemed unsafe for larger more robust kids to travel, pay for a day of daycare while you take a day off or burn a vacation day that daycare gives you so you don't have to pay someone else to watch your kid while you watch your kid. And if I had school age kids remote learning at home one of us would have to be home anyway...

Stupid policy... One vacation day burned for both of us.

welp, it's 1:44 AM. I just finished an hour of shoveling snow and the stuff is still coming down.
main reason I went out was to clear my portable canopy garage. I don't think it would have survived the full 8" .
cleaned the wiffies car off too, I better get some good "steak" real soon.

edit: forgot to mention I almost stepped on a flying squirrel that had burrowed into the snow looking for bird seed.

got up at 2 and put a heat lamp on the allis engine, at 3 started the driveway. done at 4. Even with gloves/boots hands and feet are froze. snow was waist deep. think its 12 here right now.

I like running and if you want to run in the winter here you need something to grab the ice. They make things that strap to the shoes but they messed with my stride. Real suds and studded shoes exist also but they are expensive. My $1.00 box of screws work great and I can replace them many times before getting to the cost of carbide studs.

I studded my work boots too and it was great outside but dangerous in concrete. I have to deal with a mixture of the two at work, but more of the concrete so I took them off.

I use Kold Kutter ice racing screws. Bout 15 bucks for a bag of 250 of em I think (haven't needed a new bag in years). They are alot harder and alot sharper than sheet metal screws. I have them in I think 5 or 6 different pairs boots and shoes. NEVER walk on a hardwood, or linoleum floor wearing these things!

Dirtman, I'm going to look those up. The wear was the only downside to the sheet metal screws. These look to take care of that problem while remaining affordable. If I remember correctly it was $40 or something for the carbide shoe studs. Thanks!!

And yes, regardless of stud material stay off of hardwood or other soft floors. Also, indoor concrete, tile, etc. you may as well be walking studless on ice! The running shoe soles flex enough that the rubber in the middle grabs a bit but stiff-soled work boots are another story.

My daughter hasn't had power since Sunday night. I'm pretty sure there's at least 6-inches of snow where I live here in north Texas.

Just finished chipping ice at work and salting everything. This was after spreading a bunch of salt around before driving to work.

I’d rather deal with snow than ice any time.
