Cold air intake

Does anybody have a real aftermarket air cleaner assembly home made or store bought? The ones that I keep seeing have a cone shaped filter on a pretty polished pipe but the setup really does not pull in cold air it circulates engine air. I will build one myself but I would like to see your ideas.
 
the stock air intake is a cold air intake

the 2.9 airbox pulls air through a hole in the inner fender, and depending on the year of rbv it even has a duct that routes it to the front and pulls it through the grille

any of the aforementioned aftermarket clamp-ons, on a polished tube are a hot air intake

if you have the ambition you could do what i did, i made my own with dual clamp ons, a fabricated air box, and a cowl hood.

Im thinking about pulling the air from the same area as the stock cold air box. I need to figure out the tubing. I wonder if you could modify the stock air box for more flow and a cone filter?

just get a stock replacement high-flow filter, put it in your airbox, and be done
 
Don't waste your time. The stock airbox & filter will flow more air than your engine can pull.

the debate between high-flow filters vs. paper filters rages on.......

yes it will flow as much as the engine needs, but at what rate of resitance?

the benefits seen on a high flow filter isn't to get more volume, but more to get the same volume at less resistance

any resistance that an engine sees will equate to a loss of power.....that's just common sense

If you put a vacuum gauge on the OEM intake tube at 5000RPM, and WOT you won't measure any vacuum. Therefore, the OEM intake / filter IS NOT the limiting factor for air flow. This throws your resistance theory out.
 
i think you should be using a manometer not a vacuum gauge

a vacuum gauge isn't precise enough to measure the difference made

a person who has ever done it, or even knows what they are talking about would know that

Ok, one more time......take a look at the diameter of the throttle body plate, and then took at the area of the OEM paper filter. And your still going to tell me increasing the area of the OEM paper filter is going to make any difference?

Bottom line, the OEM paper filter IS NOT going to be restrictive to air flow!
Because of CAFE standards, auto manufacturers don't design intake systems to be inefficient! The reason for the small diameter throttle body plate, and intake runners is to increase the air velocity entering the cylinders via the intake valves.

Anyway, I did something similar to what you are asking about.
I also added the larger throttle body recently.
With that set up, my 2.9 is boggy until it warms up but runs fine otherwise.
What I did increases intake sound considerably but gives it a nice growl from inside. As far as performance? Eh, who knows, it never was one to set you back in the seat on acceleration . . .
