cold air intake vs drop in filter??

First off, I quit running a k&n filter. too much maintenance to clean them. and second, i have a question, i see alot of the dirt bikes and some oof road racers using a foam filter soaked in oil or whatever it is(also lawnmowers, usually older ones) what if any is the benefit? or perhaps on OLD trucks the oil bath filters. I know those are very restrictive. Just wondering.

On dirt bikes, It's probably just because they are simple filters... It's a simple engine (2-stroke) and if you do destroy something, not that expensive to repair... Back when I used to be into all that stuff (back when 4-strokes were just coming into the scene) I know they used to rebuild the motor from the top end up after just a couple heats...

I bought into the "k&n air filters are the best in the world" craze for a few years but have since learned my lesson. I ran a k&n panel filter in my LTZ Lumina for 2-3 years, until it started causing engine problems. I had just got another filter less than 10,000 miles before, and whenever I drove when it was cold and wet the car would start bucking and shuddering at idle, have no power and get absolute crap mileage. The CEL came on and stayed on. The car used to get mileage in the mid-20's when I first got it; at it's worst, it would average around 13-14. One day, I wised up and pulled the air intake assembly apart, cleaned everything meticulously, changed the PCV valve, oil and replaced the k&n with a FRAM tough guard air filter (which is actually a decent filter). Immediately, the CeL turned off (and stayed off), the idle smoothed out, I had power again (and lots of it) and the mileage went back up into the 20's. After that, I vowed to never run anything besides dry, OEM style air filters and havent looked back!
