cold air intake vs drop in filter??

i have a 88 2.9 motor in my truck i opened the grill up alil better and put a cold air intake on and the responce when i hit the gas is way better it helped alot more then what i thought it would , i mean its alil 2.9 but it made a big difference. i like it. put a K&N on the wifes 92 4runner 3.0 and it hepled there to so all you can do is try it out, they would have never made them or have blown up in the import seen if they dident do any thing. it was money well spent.

Yes, but the factory air filter setup IS a cold air setup.

Hell even the original 2.9 setup had the air intake behind the grille.

Yes there's a preheater tube but that tube is CLOSED OFF most of the time.
Eliminating it can get you into legal hot water in terms of emmissions laws.

My brother LOVES K&N filters.
He will NOT use them on his own vehicle.

You see he is a Ford Dealer mechanic.

K&N filters make him more hours and thus more money.

Especially on the turbo diesels

Ever seen a turbo diesel that's bee run behind a K&N?

It's fugly.

Correct, it is a cold air system

K&Ns have voided a lot of vehicle manufacturer's warranties. That's why they have this:

K&N will not be responsible for any other expenses incurred by the customer under the terms of this warranty, nor shall it be responsible for any damages either consequential, special, contingent, or otherwise; or expenses or injury arising directly or indirectly from the use of the K&N Air Filter.

Have to agree with Bob on the legalities.

The Jeepers have caught on to the truth about K&N types and either HAVE or are taking them off their rides.

Big JIm

I agree there is alot of sponsorship that goes along with racing. I never said there was NOT a application for K&n filters, I'm just saying that it is not economical to switch to the filters.

one way you could look at it is its more economical in the way that your making less garbage by reusing something instead of making more garbage. if you want more power then just replace the factory rubber pipe with a solid metal one or something so at least it won't be so restrictive.

ive seen a few of those turbos on the diesels after a cold air intake on them. can you say no fins left, but half them guys are oilfield and run nothing but back roadand and dont take care of thier trucks, i run a k&n and have had no problem

HI1... I've run K&N and S&B filters on all my vehicles including my drag cars. No problems here. Torn 220,000m engines down and look like normal wear inside. It all has to do with the maintenance of the oiled air filters. Most people oil them too much, others don't clean them when they should. I gain H.P/TQ and better fuel mileage with my set-ups, with no adverse effects. I will continue to use them as long as their available. FYI. :icon_thumby:

I thought this thread died? :icon_confused:
Well, since it's back from the dead I just wanna say someone put a K&N on my LT1 Camaro, and it didn't do anything... Actually, when you pull the filter off the intake elbow, you can see a very fine layer of dust on it... It's not even cold air, it sucks are from right in front of the engine...

crap, i need someone to sell me a stock airbox now

send me your aftermarket cold air intake and ill send you my stock one :)

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Lol, i dont have teh whole intake, just the filter

ah shit i got a cold air intake from my old 99 but it doesn't work with the plastic intake, the throttle body is too small and far back which is bogus. this is probably the worse thread to advertise but COLD AIR INTAKE FOR SALE fits all 2 piece metal 3.0 intakes and i got euro tail lights for sale too! sorry for jacking the thread

First off, I quit running a k&n filter. too much maintenance to clean them. and second, i have a question, i see alot of the dirt bikes and some oof road racers using a foam filter soaked in oil or whatever it is(also lawnmowers, usually older ones) what if any is the benefit? or perhaps on OLD trucks the oil bath filters. I know those are very restrictive. Just wondering.

To shed some light on the subject without stirring the pot here... The K&N air filter system works on two principals.. first is the fact it lets more air though. It does this through a coarser filtering medium. Second, for those of you that use a K&N filter, servicing it should only take place about once a year... and by servicing it, I mean cleaning it. For upkeep, all you have to do is knock out the large particles and debris followed with a LIGHT coat of the specified air filter oil. By NOT cleaning it, you leave some of the fine particulate on the air filter... its called "caking" and it's imperative for the "proper air filtration" to take place. With said caking on the air filter, it will ACTUALLY filter the air as good as an OEM air filter.
Now, with the above being said about caking, once that has taken place, there is no advantage to running the K&N air filter except for one thing.. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. You can reuse that air filter for a good portion of the life of your vehicle... not to mention the ca$h you save by not buying a new air filter.

Ok.. I have said it. That doesn't mean that I approve of using the above mentioned air filter... all I'm doing is putting the facts out there.

And for those that say they use them in off road racing... well.... some people do, but not without using a pre-filter sock over it. If it were me... and I was running in dusty conditions, I would be adapting a Donaldson style heavy dusty air filter canister. (works on cyclonics).
