so i installed a cold air intake of my 4.0 ranger 4x4, it alrdy has mods done to it, 65mm throttlebody, 70mm MAF, big injectors, ported upper intake, tuned by Hypertech, so i decided to get rid of stock airbox crap,

i installed the piping one day, ran fine, went the next day and for the cone and MAF adapter plate. put the adapter plate and air cone on, now it has lost power, bogs, and even stalls when putting it into gear, really not sure what the problem is, its a 1994 ranger. ugh.

You removed the stock cold air intake to put on an aftermarket cold air intake? Why?

Have you pulled the codes yet?

i removed the stock air box and installed cold air intake system, there isnt any codes, didnt trip a engine light, nothing.... just loss of power and acting like the MAF isnt reading, not sure wtf the problem is.

The stock air box is a cold air intake. Unless someone removed the tube that goes from the box to the grill it pulls cold air in.

Did you reuse the stock MAF? Does anything change when you disconnect the MAF while the engine is running? It could be your MAF is bad. Try putting the stock cold air intake back on and see it that changes anything.

yea i removed the one that goes to the grill, but when i unplug the maf, it just runs really bad andf shuts off, just like it should be, so the maf isnt bad, its new, lol. i just tihnk its getting like, idk, too much air or something? lol.

Is the cone open to the inside of the engine compartment?

Check for air leaks between your MAF and TB. You might be in limp mode.

i dont think im in limp mode, i did have 1 clamp loose and was allowing air in, i fixed it then it still doing it. the cone is still in the engine compartment, right where the old air box was.

Reset your ECC so it can re-learn what "normal" operation is for your engine and drive it about 10 miles. When I reset mine, it took about 40 miles before it started to run good after I replaced my MAF and cleaned my IAC.

Where is your intake pulling its cold air from? Is the cone in an air box that is pulling cold air from outside the engine compartment? Or is the cone just in the open in the engine compartment?

how do i reset it? unplug the battery? and the big maf and stuff have been on there for a while, and it ran fine. it just started doing this when i put the cold air intake on, and yea its on the engine compartment where the old air box was, for the time being atleast until i can get a few more adapters for my cold air piping.

I had a similar problem on my 94 4.0 when i put on a CAI. Mine still has the stock maf so this may not necessarily be the same for your situation. i took the idea out of the tech library for the shower drain adapter (it really wasn't that good of an adapter) anyways my engine was barely idling so i went on to seek out the problem... i took the filter and the intake tube off (w/ the adapter still attached) and took a look down the filter end of the tube and noticed that the maf sensor was above the opening of the adapter so based on what i saw it seemed like the sensor was not having enough airflow pass across it due to restriction of the small opening. (if you need me to i'll try to explain better) anyways, so i trashed the shower drain adapter and found one for around 10 bucks on ebay made out of aluminum. When i installed the new one it had a much bigger opening and i could see that the airflow would clearly pass the maf w/o the restriction of the smaller opening. hope this helps and good luck.:icon_thumby:

no i understand what your saying, my adapter is for a stock maf so it is smaller than my 70mm maf, but i didnt think it would make a difference, my 2.3t ranger has the aluminum adapter on its maf so i may try switching them and see if it fixes the problem.

thanks man.

Wait...

So you removed the stock cold air intake system and installed an aftermarket hot air intake system? That was brilliant.

You either have leaks in your piping, or like blh0007 said, the MAF is not getting a good reading of the air, either because of turbulence from it's location/position, or a portion of it is being blocked by a smaller section of piping/couplers in front of it.

or because small droplets of oil from the oiled filter have landed on the maf sensor blocking its ability to sense airflow

That too. :icon_thumby:

I know you can buy non-oiled cone filters, and he didn't mention what kind he bought.
