Coil meltdown and a/c hoses

I had the plugs and wires replaced today (sure, maybe I coulda but that last rear plug...) and the service guy found the coil beginning to show signs of meltdown (plastic warped and I already knew the engine was cutting out). My 92 only has 98600 on it and has been well kept. For 2 years it sat a lot but recently it has become my daily driver again. What would cause the coil to go bad? A typical trip is 6 miles to work at 55 - 60 mph and return 8 hours later.

Issue 2: air conditioner hoses. I converted to R134a two years ago but the freon leaked out within four months. Is there any fix for the connections or do I just need to eat it and replace all the hoses and connections?

Thanks in advance

If you already don't know 134a has smaller molecules and will leak where R12 will not or it will leak faster. The hoses may need to be special barrier hoses, but they may be just old. Sometimes you can leave the o-rings but it's better to replace as many as you can get to with 134 compatible. Soapy solution is a good DIY way to find leaks. Depending on the speed of the leak you will have to decide if you just top up the refrigerant every so often. If the compressor is a 92 I'd bet it leaks at the shaft seal, which you can probably replace yourself. For A/C parts/etc. http://www.acsource.com/index.aspx

It took me a while but I want to say "thanks" Rearanger. I checked the link for parts and now its time for action.
