I just bought a truck (97 2.3) that is throwing the codes P0340 and P1131. The truck runs great, it doesn't appear to be missing or running rough. I've done a lot of searching and it seems that other than the CMP, the P0340 could the alternator or possibly a timing issue. I haven't found much on the P1131 other than if it's throwing P0340 too to do the CMP first before replacing the O2 sensor.

Is there any diagnostics I can do before I start throwing parts at it? Where should I start?

The alternator is not likely to be the cause of either code.

First thing to do for the P0340 is to pull the cam sensor off and inspect it. I have found more than one 340 caused by the little magnet in the cap coming unglued and wiggling around, making the signal erratic.

The 1131 is a weird code. Lots of things can cause it, and some of them are pretty off the wall. In this case I would replace the oxygen sensor before doing anything else since you just bought the truck. Ford does consider the O2 sensor to be a 100K mile maintenance item.

Ok thanks.

Ok thanks. I also need a compressor, do you know what vehicles same compressor is used in?

1131

Yes, tackle the P0340 first as it could potentially solve your other code also.

Couple of things to look at for P1131 (besides the sensor change):
Check intake air system for leaks, obstructions and damage
Check air cleaner element, air cleaner housing for blockage
Verify integrity of the PCV system
Check for vacuum leaks
Check for exhaust leaks near O2 sensor

Alright, thanks. The hose that connects the intake to the valve cover (I think it's the cover I didn't pay much attention to it) was split down the side where it connects to the engine so it wasn't sealing very good. I just replaced that and reset the codes this afternoon, I've got my fingers crossed.

I just changed the o2 sensor and drove it 20 miles, no light. Hopefully that fixed it.

It just came back. Any suggestions on where to to start? I noticed the wires on the harness that connect to the 02 sensor were showing. They didn't appear to be damaged though. How would I go about testing the circuit?

Also, I am leaking fuel from the filler neck hose where it connects to the gas tank, could that have anything to do with p0340?

I doubt the fuel filler neck would cause your p0340 but since you need to deal with it anyways...just a neck off ebay or something (thats where I got mine recently) take off the bed and you can knock it out in an hour. Super easy swap, I also did my fuel pump while I was there, not necessary for you. I think I picked up the hose for about 32 bucks shipped. You could check it to see if it is just loose and not torn or broken if you wanted, but then if your bothering to take the bed off anyways i'd change it out since it is a very common problem area.
