Went to the local parts store to figure out what problems truck is having. They said my truck was too old. An 86 said it had to be at least a 96. Supposedly there is an adapter to make the scanner work, but could not find the port to plug it in, Any ideas where i might find the port?

I have an 88 and it is on the passenger side in the engine compartment. Its on the inner fender well and is usually clipped on to the side with a plastic clip. There should be a cap on it and when you pull the cap it should look like an older style printer plug. Its not an OBD2 since that may have been what they thought you were asking about. My 88 it says EEC on the cap of it and it uses the Ford OBD1 plug.

Yeah, they probably only know about the OBD2 scanners (guys that work at AutoZone/PepBoys around here don't know shit), and didn't realize you could have adapters for OBD1. Are you taking it somewhere to have them scan it, or do you have your own scanner?

If you have analog volt/multimeter you can try it this way.

and yes under the hood on the passanger side near /between the airbox and the firewall

bought an OBD1 scanner at Kragen for Ford OBD1 last week. cost me $29, might have been a closeout. INNOVA model 3145, blisterpack on wall behind cashier.

scaner works for 84 to 92 rangers with the aforementioned OBD port

Was going to have it read a a parts store. The guys there are pretty good to me. Should be I have been in at least once a weak since I got the ranger this spring!:bawling:

The parts guy did know they had an obd1 adapter to make the obd2 work, just did not know where the plug was for it. I am going to have to go back tomorrow to try it again. Ranger ran rough all the way home tonight, and died as I was pulling into my drive. Hope I can find out the problem with scanner.:icon_thumby:

Thanks for help guys.

I do have a volt meter, just don't quite know how to use it! I will try to follow the instructions when it is warmer. Right now it is about 7 in central Illinois!

Well, went by the parts store to see if they could run the scanner on the ranger. different guy in there said they did not have the attachment for the Ford. :bawling: So, had to talk the wife into letting me spend some money at sears. A little begging and $45 later a code reader is on the way!!! :yahoo: Probably will be cheaper than paying for it at the mechanic's shop. I am still having idle issues so hope this will tell me what I need to fix!!!

I go the one that has a digital numeric readout, so this ought to be a no brainer for me, but I am still an amatuer!
