code 54 iat or vat signal to high

well, you don't have a Vane Air Temperature sensor on your 2.9, I would test your ACT sensor against a temp chart such as this one: http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/index.php?p=29 check the resistance across the sensor pins and compare it to the chart. It is best to do this test on a cold engine. with an ambient temp higher than 50* F You will need to know the ambient temp for the result of your test to make any sense. If the sensor tests reasonably close to what it is supposed to then your problem is elsewhere

will i have to reset the check engine light or will it go off on its own

it will go off after a bit if the problem is fixed
