I'm trying to hunt down a oil leak on my 2.9 so sunday i took it to the car wash and washed the bottom of the engine off and some on top but stayed away from the dist. I drove from the car wash parking lot to wal mart parked it went in for about 30 min came back out and drove around town it was running a little rough but i figured i got the dist a little wet. Today i drove it 100 miles and only in town it will act up. When you push down on the gas pedal it will spit and spudder then finally take off. Runs good up and down the road at 65mph. The check engine light came on so i checked the codes and found code 14. I swapped out the ign. module on the dist. and also pulled the cap off to check for water. Still running rough but only around town. Is thier anything else i can check? I have checked the connections on the ds where everything hooks up coming out of the fire wall

I forgot to put down. When you rev it up it will go away and run great for awhile.

+1 on vacuum lines replace any that are hard or cracked. If you have a timing light put it on the coil wire to the dizzy and see if the rough idle is in conjunction with the spark. or does the timing jump around. put the light on the damper pully and see if the timing responds smooth with the throttle. My book says TFI module, pickup coil or wiring issues. Check the connectors to the module and the coil for corrosion or water. Clean them and put some dielectric grease on the connectors when you put them back together.

I replaced the pickup in the dist. today. Also checked all vac. lines and intake for leaks none found. I checked the wire harness and found a few wires needing repaired. I took it out for a test drive same thing. On the highway its fine runs perfect. In town when you run at low rpm's it acts up and throws the check engine light on and same old code 14:icon_confused:

Have you checked the timing chain put a breaker bar and socket on the crank and turn it back and fourth and watch the rotor just enough to make it turn there should be very little slop. How does it cold start have you checked the timing, compression, vacuum. Oh yea how old are the plug wires and PCV and tune up. Eliminate all the variables first when you troubleshoot. I`m voting for a wiring issue cheap and easy. Just throwing stuff out there let us know what you find either way especially the solution.

Timeing chain is new, Wires plugs and cap are also new. I checked the vac. leaks tonight with carb cleaner none found. The engine maybe has 9000 since rebuild. I took the wire harness all apart and found 2 rub spots in the wires going up to the map sensor. Fixed them and no other bad wires found.

I just dont understand why it only acts up in town!:annoyed:
