Ok, so I'm not an idiot, I'm a ASE master for what it's worth but this has got me. I've owned 55 BII's but a 4.0 conversion is the first. The BII is my son's '84 with a Toyo 5 speed trans using the external slave cylinder. We (of course) used the 4.0 clutch (new) but retained the 2.8 throwout bearing. The clutch feels normal and there is absolutly no air in the system as it worked fine with the 2.9 we took out, and I test bled the system. However even though the clutch feels fine it will not release. No, the disc is not bent and the preasure plate is fine. From what I can see, the master cylinder rod needs to push in about 1/4" more. The firewall is in great shape, no cracks, it just appears that it's not getting enough stroke. My question is should we be using the internal slave with the 4.0 clutch? If so then I have a trans from an '87. Has anyone else run into this?

i had to use an internal slave from a exploder 4.0 in my 4.0 swap. but i was lucky that my ranger came stock with a m5od behind a 2.9. i first tried it with the stock 2.9 slave...but was a no go...had to take the trans down. same damn thing happen when i did my v8 swap....i used a trans from a 300 6and the slave was different the n one from a 302....

The slave is not different between a 2.9 and a 4.0

OR between a 4.9 and a 5.0.

they are however different between an '85-'87 & 88-92
and an '88-92 and a 1993-up

The differences are all YEAR changes, not engine or trans changes.
