Clutch question

I am replacing the clutch in my 86 B2 using the larger 10 inch clutch. In the description of the clutch set they mention one with non self adjusting and another with self adjusting cover. Can anyone tell me what this is?

I just replaced the clutch in my Ranger with a self adjusting style cover (same as stock). As far I could tell the self adjusting part adjusts the pivot point of the diaphragm so the slave cylinder does not have to keep coming out further as the clutch disk wears. This keeps the range of motion of the slave in the same location. I guess this is better than having the slave move out further to maintain clutch adjustment.

Basically what GW said. Non-self adjusting pressure plates need to be set up and adjusted before they are installed or else it will start slipping pretty bad after a few thousand miles.

Do you know how the adjustment is manually made?

I can't say that I do. I've heard of them, never actually used one myself. All I know is that a set of feeler gauges is involved.

The only pressure plate I ever adjusted before installation was the self adjustig pressure plate. The instructions came with the ckutch kit but was not easy to understand.

I have installed many clutches in my nearly 50 years of working on cars. All but one was with the standard non self adjusting and I never did any adjustment to the pressure plate before installation. Never had a problem with them.

I do check the set up on my race car clutch because I use non-stock components and sometimes have to shim the pessure plate where it mounts on the flywheel to allow for a thicker disk.
