Clutch problems!

Hi all,

I've figured out a few issues I have, and they're all to do with my clutch! I have firewall flex in my 1990 Ranger Custom, and due to that I have lost all the bottom end of my clutch. To make things more interesting, my slave cylinder is leaky so it needs to be topped up and double pumped now and again. (Before the firewall flex got as bad as it did anyway, now I don't even have clutch) So my poor ranger is parked at where I work, which luckily has all the tools I need to regulate the situation. My plan is to bolt in a piece of 14 gauge steel on the inside of the truck, disassembling my pedal assembly and fitting it to the right dimensions. From there, I was considering replacing my slave...but there sure is a lot of work involved in that, and I was told by a mechanic friend I might as well put in a new clutch while I'm at it. Seriously, is there anything that's working on my clutch??

Anyway, do you mindful and experienced folk have any experience with this? Thanks in advance, I'll try and post pictures once I start.

Cheers!

Bad slave = pull the transmission. Was gonna tell u u had only a short amount of life left on the slave anyway, given its thirstiness.

If ure gonna pull the tranny and replace the slave I would also:
- install new TOB
- install new clutch
- install new RMS (tho there is significant superstition around doing this if it's not leaking. I would replace it)
- resurface pressure plate aka flywheel
- Maybe replace the master...

Am I missing anything?

- pilot bearing

U should be able to get all of these in a single kit, BTW

Hmmmm. This work is probably worth doing, for the well being of the truck. Any companies you would recommend for these parts? If I'm going to do it, I might as well do it right.

LUK sells a complete kit that includes everything. Disc, pressure plate, throwout, pilot, slave cylinder, and an alignment tool. Hit ebay or head to Autozone. You might also try RockAuto as they seem to have almost anything you need.

And do follow px's advice on the search button.

Sorry guys, I know there's a tool, I was just curious if you knew and companies that made really good replacement parts, that's all. I started working on it yesterday, I'll post. Pictures when I can!

And I appreciated that, thank you. I wanted to figure out if others had good experience with certain companies surounding my specific issue. Thats all. I looked into LUK. Seems good, I'll do more research.

i just did my clutch & slave. parts was just under $200 from autozone, clutch still looked good & only had about 70,000 miles on it, but throwout bearing was bad, had locked up & slave had been leaking for awhile, had to add fluid daily to reservior. its sure nice to have pedal again, had next to none for awhile, one time i went to leave from work & truck took off as soon as it started, with the clutch pedal still on the floor! every time i would shift it was like the "friction point" would change, was just about undriveable, took me 2 days to do, had it apart once before, id say about 8 years ago, trans lost 2nd gear & i had replaced everything while i was in there. this past summer i had put in a new clutch master & the line to the trans, so now all the clutch hydraulics are new.
