hey gang so i'm in need of some advice. i searched previous posts and found one that sounded like mine. however it got only one response so i'm hoping there is a greater consensus about this noise i'm talking about.

i just recently got some work done on the tranny and clutch on my 86 ranger 2.9 liter. however, whenever the truck is in neutral and i have my foot off the clutch it make a low humming/buzzing sound (i can only hear it whenever i have the radio off). when i put my foot on the clutch or am driving it goes away.

it did have this problem BEFORE i took it in but it was VERY LOUD. i could even hear with over normal radio volume. now its still there but at the low sound described above.

i've taken it back but the dude says a low humming sound like this is normal. i had the clutch and tranny done with at this shop so i spent a GOOD AMOUNT OF CASH. i don't want to be screwed over and want to take care of it BEFORE the warranty expires. the mechanic does seem sincere and an overall good guy but before i accept this i want to hear from the RANGER EXPERTS.

so what do you guys think? is this normal or this this noise NOT supposed to be heard at all?

thank you guys in advance for all your help.

did he change the throwout bearing? Thats about the only thing i can think of that usually exhibits those symptoms when dying. Not normal.....have him take another look at it.

it could be the pilot bearing if that didn't get replaced, Or it could be like mine was when i got it the trans input shaft had, some rust and it made a sound like that. i thought it was the throw out bearing, till i took it apart.

thanks for your advice

thank guys for all your help. i tried to respond earlier today but my work internet blocked a response.

i was able to call the mechanic and he said that the throwout bearing and the pilot bearing was replaced when the work was done.

is there an easy way for me to check if he did this? also if all parts are new, would the noise be normal?

i guess the biggest question is: do any of you guys that have manual trannys have a low noise coming from the clutch when its in neutral and you have the foot off?

cause if there is no noise coming from anybody else, then there's obviously something wrong with mine! once gain anybody who can shed some light here i'd be greatly apprecitaive.

and for those who responded - thanks man. you guys rock! :headbang: it helps to know that there's people out there willing to help out!

Just take it back to your mechanic. Mine doesn't make a low humming sound like you describe. Either you got bad parts or somebody is lying.

i have an 88 2.9 and it makes all sorts of noises but the only thing that comes from the clutch is kind of a screeching sound that happens sometimes when i take off slowly, sounds like just some slippage on an old clutch but yours is a bit more concerning i think. the only thing i can think of (inexperience kid talking) is maybe the new parts need time to wear in but that all depends on when the work was done, and if thats even possible. my brother replaced his timing belt on his VW jetta and it squealed for about 24 hours before it wore in a bit

Mine has been doing this on and off for the past month or so. I have been told that it is either the input shaft bearing, or the throwout bearing. I haven't had time to replace them yet, but like you described it is a very quiet noise.

well i appreciate the responses. i think the biggest thing i have is that i'm afraid that soft noise will continue to get louder over time. especially when the warranty expires.

the overall consensus is that this is not normal. no one has yet responded saying that a noise like that is normal. chad333 says that his does the same noise but acknowledges that it is a problem that hasn't had time to address.

so thank you guys very much. i can go tomorrow more confident that it needs to be gone.

anymore responses are always welcome. TRS KICKS ASS!!:icon_hornsup:
